I was putting gum in my mouth while looking at my boyfriend's family photo. Christian and his brothers - Felix and Donald - all pull bleak expressions while their mother and father Patricia and Max and their youngest child and only daughter Amy pull cheerful smiles.
I'm just Christian's girlfriend Erin. Everyone else is coming for the reunion. Donald and his wife Kelly have already arrived. This house is their vacation home and it is so large. Beautiful chandeliers and a large table.
"Hi," I say to Patricia who's still cleaning the plates and silverware and glasses.
"Oh, hello," she says respectively.
"Can I help with anything?" I ask. I've already gotten to know Donald and
Kelly and they both seem to have accepted me.
"Oh.... Err, I think I'm all set," she says with a kind grin.
"Okay," I say beginning to walk away.
"Oh Erin!" she calls back. "I need some milk. Could you go to the neighbour's house and get some. His name is Eric."
"Okay, I'll be back soon," I say leaving the kitchen. The kitchen seems to be one of the smallest rooms in the house.
Outside is Christian, Donald and Max setting up lights around the bushes in the front garden. "Hold that there," I say referring to their current position as father and sons.
I take out my camera and take a picture of them smiling, and me finishing with a calm "Beautiful."
"Where you off to?" Christian asks.
"Your Mum asked me to get some milk from the neighbour's."
"Really?" he says in surprise.
"Yeah," I say. "I'll be back soon," I say before leaving. It's a really long road to this guy's house. I could've taken the woods, but it seems more freeing. The house is just as glorious as our's, but maybe a bit more fancy.
They seem to have the radio on loop with the same song, Perfect Day by Lou Reed. I'm there for the whole song once knocking on the door. The car is there and the radio's on, so there's no reason they shouldn't be in unless they're forgetful and fit. So I just give up and leave."Amy!" Patricia calls to a blonde haired girl about my age while exiting the double doors that lead to the foyer.
"Hi Mummy!" she calls and giivng her mother a large hug. "This is my boyfriend Tucker," she says gesturing to a man wearing a scarf around his neck.
"Patricia," she says presenting herself.
"Tucker, please to meet you," he says.
"My little Felix," she says turning to a man with shiney black hair.
"His Mum. This is my girlfriend Elizabeth," he says presenting a girl smoking by a motorcycle.
"Lovely to meet you," Patrica says. Elizabeth just responds by blowing smoke. In the house, Amy is like a cheesy teenager, greeting her family with giggles and hugs.
"Hi, I'm Amy," she says to me. "You must be Erin. God you're beautiful."
"Thank you," I say.
"Daddy!" Amy yells running to Max.At the dining table, everyone is dressed fancy, with me wearing a long sleeve navy blue shirt and a cream cardigan and jeans. I'm sitting next to Christian. No has said he anything since Max said grace.
"So Erin, aren't you still in school?"
"Erm...." My mouth is swallowing wine, "....yes."
"And weren't you Christian's student?"
"Yes, well, I was," I say happy someone is talking to me. Donald says something under his breath while taking a drink.
"What?" Christian says.
"What?" Donald asks since he doesn't know.
"Did you say that's unprofessional?"
"No, I was just....." The discussion slowly transforms into an argument. Tucker gets up, Christian and Donald are yelling at each other and everyone is attempting to restore order.
Then I hear it.
It sounds like glass smashing, but everything seems to be in order, but then the table goes eerily quiet. I follow everyone's gaze and see Tucker, with an arrow plunged into the centre of his forehead.
