Stiles' POV
The Pack swarm me as soon as I am out of Derek's car. But they don't ask any questions or push me to explain what's going on, in fact they don't even touch me. They all just say good morning and sweep me away towards the school building, including me in conversation but not pushing me to contribute. They take my shrugs or one word answers and move on. Derek must have spoken to them and I remind myself to thank him for it later, because this is much better. They follow me to my locker and when the bell rings they disperse, except for Scott who waits patiently for me to sort my books and walks with me to my first class. I can see him chewing on the inside of his cheek, wanting to say something but fighting against the alpha's order not to.
"I'm okay" I tell him, before patting his arm once and disappearing into class. I move towards the back, out of the way and take a seat in the corner by the window. This is one of the classes that I have that is Pack free, so I plan to take the time to reflect on yesterday and this morning. At least I did, until my attention was pulled away by a shy;
"Hello" I turn in my seat to the desk next to mine, where a boy I have never seen before is sitting. He has dirty blonde hair and high cheek bones, eyes a dark, muddy brown. "My names Duke" he adds, eyeing me up and down from his seat.
"Stiles" I tell him, offering my hand for him to shake, which he takes without hesitation. "Your new?" I ask, even though I know that he is, because I know everyone in this town. Duke nods.
"Yeah, moved here last week, I was supposed to start yesterday but I was still unpacking" he tells me, slouching down his is desk in that 'I don't give a fuck way' that reminds me of Jackson, just a little bit. "Do you play lacrosse?" I ask, getting to the important questions first, Duke grins and nods once. A man a few words, kind of like Derek.
"Why'd you move here?" I then ask, completely ignoring the teacher who has started today's lesson. I don't think I need to know about biology anyway.
"My folks relocated for work, my Dad's got a job at the police station as a deputy." He yawns, scratching at the back of his head, which ruffles his hair up in quite an attractive way.
"Oh cool, my Dad's the Sheriff!" I whisper, conscious that I am supposed to be working, but I can't help the excitement in my voice. Duke only raises is eyebrows and nods his head to show his appreciation of the fact. "Do you wanna sit with me at lunch? I can introduce you to my pa-mates?" I tell him, coughing slightly to try and cover my near mistake.
"Oh, erm. I don't really like... crowds. I'll probably just chill in my car" he whispers back at me, and I can totally understand his reasons for that, because I too am not a fan of crowds. "But you're welcome to join me" he adds, biting his lip in what I can only assume is anticipation, but there's an excitement in his eyes that doesn't quite match.
"Yeah cool, I'll just text the guys and let them know" I smile, whipping out my phone to message the group chat.
To: Pack of Pups
I'm going to sit with the new kid at lunch as he doesn't like crowds and I think he needs a friend. See you after school- or in class. -Abominable Snowman
I hit send, smiling at the nickname Derek had assigned when the group chat was first made, being called a pup is Derek's own way of annoying Scott everyday.
Alright bro, let us know if you change your mind. He's welcome to sit with us. -Little Beta
I snort at Scott's nickname, I remember when Derek had changed it from his actual name and Scott had thrown a hissy fit, now it's used to tease him, Derek does like to prove that he's in charge.
