On the 10th of August 2018, a Horizon Air Bombardier Q400, registered as November 449 Quebec Xray (N449QX), was stolen from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (IATA: SEA, ICAO: KSEA, the airport is referred to as Sea-Tac), Seattle, Washington, the perpetrator was 29 year old Richard Russell, he was a Horizon Air Ground Service agent with no piloting experience, after Russell performed an unauthorised takeoff, two McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle Fighters were scrambled to intercept the aircraft, Sea-Tac ATC made radio contact with Russell, who was the sole occupant on board the aircraft, he described himself as a "broken guy, got a few screws loose, I guess", about 1 hour and 15 minutes after takeoff, Russell died by intentionally crashing the aircraft on the lightly populated Ketron Island in Puget Sound.

An unauthorised takeoff was made at 19:32pm local time (02:32am UTC, 11th of August), Sea-Tac ATC maintained radio contact with the occupant, the occupant stated that he didn't want to hurt anyone and in the final minutes he apologised to his friends and family, near the end of the flight, the plane was seen performing a barrel roll over Puget Sound, recovering a mere ten feet (three meters) over the water, a veteran pilot said the manoeuvre "seemed pretty well executed, without stalling or tearing the wings off", when ATC requested he land the plane after this manoeuvre, he stated that he "wasn't really planning on landing it", the two F-15's attempted to direct the plane toward the Pacific Ocean, they didn't fire at the plane, the Q400 ultimately crashed at 20:43pm local time, the plane crashed on Ketron Island in Puget Sound, Pierce County, Washington, the crash killed the occupant and it destroyed the aircraft, a post crash fire burned a 2 acre (0.8 hectares) area, the fire was extinguished the next morning, no injuries were reported despite the crash site being in close proximity to a cabin on the sparsely populated island, the cabin was occupied at the time of the crash.

The summary of the crash was Aircraft theft and suicide.
