On the 10th of July 1991, a L'Express Airlines Beechcraft C99, flying as Flight 508, registered as November 7217 Lima (N7217L), originating at Louis Armstrong International Airport (IATA: MSY, ICAO: KMSY), New Orleans, Louisiana and it was in transit from Mobile Regional Airport (IATA: MOB, ICAO: KMOB), Mobile, Alabama to Birmingham Municipal Airport (IATA: BHM, ICAO: KBHM), Birmingham, Alabama, the plane crashed while attempting to make an ILS approach to Runway 5 (since renumbered to Runway 6) at Birmingham Municipal Airport (now Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport) in Birmingham, Alabama, the plane crashed in the Fairview area near Five Points West in the Ensley neighbourhood, out of the 15 people on board the plane, 13 people were killed in the crash, to date it's the deadliest commercial aviation accident in Alabama history.
The Captain of the flight (he was at the controls) said the plane experienced a significant roll to the left on landing approach, then it experienced an extreme updraft that pushed the plane's nose into the air, the plane entered a severe thunderstorm cell southwest of the airport, the crew lost directional control and was unable to recover the plane prior to impacting two houses in the Ensley neighbourhood of Birmingham at 6:11:27pm CDT (Central Daylight Time), the plane struck one home, crossed a tree lined residential street and slammed into a second home, the plane immediately erupted into flames, twelve passengers and the First Officer were killed in the crash; the Captain, one passenger and four residents were injured after the crash.
