WARNINGS OF A PLANE CRASH AND MID AIR COLLISION

Allegheny Airlines Flight 853, registered as November 988 Victor Juliet (N988VJ), was a regularly scheduled domestic passenger service flight from Logan International Airport (IATA: BOS, ICAO: KBOS), Boston, Massachusetts to St. Louis International Airport (IATA: STL, ICAO: KSTL), St. Louis, Missouri with stops at Baltimore Airport (IATA: BWI, ICAO: KBWI), Baltimore, Maryland, Cincinnati Airport (IATA: CVG, ICAO: KCVG), Cincinnati, Ohio and Indianapolis International Airport (IATA: IND, ICAO: KIND), Indianapolis, Indiana, on the 9th of September 1969, the aircraft serving the flight and the route was a McDonnell Douglas DC-9 that collided in mid air with a Piper PA-28, registered as November 7374 Juliet (N7374J), light aircraft near Fairland, Indiana, the DC-9 was carrying 78 passengers and 4 crew (82 in total), the Piper was leased to a student pilot on a solo cross country flight, all 83 people of both the aircraft were killed in the accident and both aircraft were destroyed in the crash.The Allegheny flight left Cincinnati at 3:15pm local time en route to Indianapolis, the flight was flying under IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) clearance to Indianapolis and approach control at Indianapolis instructed the flight to descend to 2,500 feet after passing the Shelbyville VOR at 6,000 feet, the flight was then vectored to a 280 degree heading, the Piper was on a southeasterly heading, it was operating under a VFR (Visual Flight Rules) flight plan an at an altitude of 3,500 feet, the Piper was not in communication with ATC and it was not equipped with a transponder, the two planes converged at a relative speed of 350 miles per hour (560 kilometres per hour), the initial point of impact was at the top right section of the DC-9's vertical stabiliser, just under the horizontal stabiliser, on the Piper, the impact point was forward of the left wing root, the impact severed the entire tail assembly of the DC-9, which inverted and plotted into a soybean field at an approximate speed of 400 miles per hour (640 kilometres per hour) about 100 yards (300 feet; 91 meters) north of the Shady Acres mobile home park.
