Daniel came into the kitchen with Lockwood's hand locked in her own. He wouldn't let her walk down the stairs on her own and this was the compromise she came up with so he wouldn't throw her over his shoulder and carry her himself. George shot the two a scrunched up look before looking back down toward the table. He had set up some sort of contraption with the ring sitting in a box. "So, what are we looking at?" Lockwood asked, stopping just beside George with Daniel tucked against his other side.
"I put the ring behind silver glass so we can safely examine it." George answered.
Daniel pulled from Lockwood, getting a scowl in response. She simply rolled her eyes and walked to a chair, her body still ached. Lockwood frowned, sliding into the spot next to her and slipping his hand back into hers.
"Yeah, but i- it's daylight." Lucy countered as George switched the magnifier on his fancy microscope.
"Yes, well, to state the obvious, I'm a bit more risk averse than you, aren't I?" He shot a look at Lockwood before trailing his eyes over to Dani and shrugging as though that explained his thought process. "Now, the intruder was after the ring. But why?" George clicked something on his microscope and a live video of the ring came up on a small tv that Daniel hadn't even noticed. "Hallmarks."
"H 22 115" Lucy read out. "Maybe 'H' for Hugo?"
"No, H for Hamlet." Daniel shook her head. "It's a page code."
George nodded excitedly. "Exactly." He walked away from the table, stopping over by the counter to grab a book that wasn't there the last time Daniel checked. "Act II, Scene 2." He instructed as he handed the book over to Lucy.
"Doubt thou the stars are fire, doubt that the sun doth move, doubt truth to be a liar, but never doubt I love. . ." Lucy trailed off, reading from the play.
"This is it." Lucy flipped the book closed, examining the cover. "The hallmark's a love letter." George held a proud smirk. "That's why Annabel wanted me to take the ring. It proves she and Hugo were together. That has to be enough to put him away."
"No- It proves that whoever gave her the ring has read Hamlet, it says nothing about Hugo." Daniel shook her head, her brows pinched together.
"It doesn't prove anything." Lockwood agreed, pushing up from his chair. "So they were together. But that isn't evidence he murdered her."
"We don't even know if it was Hugo-" Daniel complained, laying her head back as she watched Lockwood clip the ring out of it's place. Lucy sighed.
"The ring's going in the safe. And, I'm keeping hold of the key, because, well, you can't be trusted." He let out a slightly airy chuckle as he clicked the ring into the necklace and grabbed the keys from the table.
"But it's her source." Lucy huffed.
"Which you stole illegally." Lockwood countered, sliding the keyring into his pocket along with the necklace. "Now, the final ruling of Sheen Road just came in. And if we don't get our shit together now, this agency's done."
George grabbed a paper from the table, yet another thing Daniel completely looked over. Maybe she was more groggy than she thought. "'Mandatory indefinite oversight'?" George read with a look akin to despair.
Lucy snatched the paper form him just as Daniel groaned and leaned into Lockwood, who had returned into the seat beside her. "What does that mean?" Lucy questioned as he looked over the paper.
"It means we still owe 60 grand, but now we can't do anything without adult supervision." Lockwood answered.
"You know, I was trained as a supervisor at Fittes. Maybe I could count as supervision?" Daniel tilted her head back to look up at her boss, but he just shook his head.
