Dr. Alexander's face appeared on the computer screen, the recognisable squint of an older woman attempting to situate herself in a foreign digital medium. Amaya smiled at the familiar face, the shakiness of her hands and the nagging voice in the back of her head that was telling her to close the computer and not click the link to the session melted away. All she felt was a warm sense of endearment and relief creeping over her.

"Is that right ... okay, can you see me?" Dr Alexander asked, squinting at the screen and scanning over all the information she was being confronted with.

"Yeah I can see you!" Amaya smiled, fighting the urge to chuckle. She sat back and sipped at the herbal tea she had gone out to buy and make for this session. The first time she had set foot in that office in LA she had feigned enjoyment and sipped at hot, bitter water with her nose scrunched up in disgust, but over time it had become a comfort and this morning the prospect of therapy without the dirty water in a mug terrified her. It didn't come close to the feeling of holding Dr. Alexander's china, the sense of guilt and appreciation for the effort and thought behind the beverage made and laid out each time, but it felt wrong to do this without it.

"Okay I think I'm getting the hang of this thing." She mumbled under her breath before shaking her head, regaining her composure and setting her gaze firmly on Amaya's face on her screen. "How have you been since we last spoke?"

Amaya froze for a moment. biting her lip in contemplation. "I'm okay..." She trailed off, unsure of quite how to unpack how she was feeling. "I'm sorry I left LA before our second appointment, I'm really grateful you were willing to see me like this!" Amaya said with a smile, gesturing to the screen.

A few moments of silence passed before Amaya realised that Dr. Alexander wasn't going to let her avoid the question, still staring expectantly at her through the screen. "Umm ... I don't know" She began, swallowing harshly as she tried to formulate a sentence. "It's weird, I feel like I should feel worse than I do right now ... maybe I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop on the whole breakup thing."

"Would you say you feel better, worse or the same as you did before the breakup?" Dr. Alexander asked as Amaya took a sip of her tea.

"I mean it's not like I feel great," Amaya said with a furrowed brow. "It's painful to know that someone I cared about and thought I knew could hurt me like that, to know that my instincts were so wrong about them. It's weird to go from feeling like I had everything planned out to not knowing what I'm going to do next ... but I also feel like there was some sort of weight lifted. I feel kind of free."
