Amaya didn't think she'd ever get used to that thick dry heat that slapped her in the face when she stepped off the plane in LA. People talk about the air changing when you travel, but nowhere else did the environment seem to so aggressively let her know that she was far away from home.

LA was a beacon of everything she'd been hiding from for the the last couple years. She had stayed firmly planted in London, making the occasional trip to New York when her US team got too antsy, but LA was an entirely different beast.

The taxi ride from the airport felt like going through a time machine in slow motion. Suddenly she was 19 again, scared and alone with a baby, another on the way, and no idea if the father of those two babies was gonna be alive when she reached her destination, let alone a presence in their babies lives.

23 and that clenching, guttural fear threatened to creep back in. She'd never left Ben alone with the kids for this long. He cleaned up his shit and the logical side of her brain knew he would be fine, but there was still that nagging feeling. Just the plane ride, not being able to check her phone every two seconds for an update had made her nauseous. The prospect of two weeks an ocean away was daunting to say the least.
