APPARENTLY MAX WAS GOOD at persuading. isabel found out the hard way.

they had arrived in the netherlands on the tuesday. max had said that he was going to spend tuesday and wednesday with his mother and sister, and so isabel thought nothing of it.

until wednesday arrived and brought max along to her hotel room with it.

so here isabel was, sat in the passenger seat of his car with her knee bouncing. "i hate you," she said, "this is not good."

"relax," he said, taking his eyes off the road for a second to glance at her. "they wanted to meet you."

"you're lying," isabel refused to believe him, shaking her head. "if you didn't like me, then how will they?"

"that's the thing," max put both hands back on the wheel to turn out of the intersection. "my mum's always liked you because she's really into racing, and my sister thinks you're pretty."

"oh god," isabel groaned. "why did i agree to this?"

IT HADN'T BEEN AS bad as isabel thought, but it was still nervewracking to sit at the dining table with sophie and victoria when she had spent a good chunk of her career fighting with max.

his family welcomed her with open arms surprisingly. victoria had switched to speaking dutch at one point to tell max that she wouldn't let him ruin what he had going on with isabel, and so max took that as a sign that clearly his family could see a lot clearer about it than he did.

"they are really nice," isabel said once they got back in the car a couple hours later. "uh, thanks for inviting me."

max pulled out of the driveway. "they liked you, you know?" he said to her. "a lot."

"that's surprising," isabel hummed, "but they didn't like me for australia, or abu dhabi?" she asked.

"no, isabel," he shook his head. "they said i deserved that," he chuckled, which made her do the same. "and they're right. no, they've always liked you, and i think that's what used to annoy me."

it was silent for a second. "used to?" she questioned.

max said nothing.

THURSDAY'S MEDIA DAY HAD thankfully mostly revolved max because it's his home grand prix, so all isabel had to do was talk to a few people in the paddock before she called it a day.

ISABEL WAS WOKEN UP on friday morning by loud knocking on her door.

checking the time and groaning when it was only six, she rolled out of bed and opened the door. "fuck off."
