Lighting flashed through the window, as the rain poured from the cloudy night sky. It was late at night, too late for a little girl to be awake. But she couldn't sleep. Not when she could hear her parents arguing from downstairs.

She always hated when they would do this. The loud bombing voices echoing from the hallways into her bedroom, along with the pure hatred in their voices. It always made the girl's stomach twist up in discomfort. Though she hated it, she was getting used to her dad and stepmother fighting.

'I hate this...I wish I was at my mom's..' She begged and pleaded even though she knew no one would hear her.

She held a strong grip on her hair, as she paid full attention to the conversation that was being yelled out throughout the house. She just wanted to go to sleep for school tomorrow.

"And will you stop the excessive behavior you have with my daughter! I keep getting calls for the school saying that they are concerned for her well being!"

"W-What are you t-talking about!? I-I have no idea what you're-"

"Oh don't give that! All the hang outs you secretly hide from me, the expensive dresses you buy her! You even threaten her when she makes any mistake. I mean come on, what's with you ruining the way she thinks about everything! SHE'S ONLY A CHILD!!" His voice bombed.

The Stepmom stood still, not bothered by his words. In fact, she gave him a simple smile.

"I don't mean any harm with my threats. I only mean for her to be her best possible self. I wouldn't want her to mess up something important in the future, like our future together. I do this so she doesn't mess anything up in front of me. That way we all can be happy together without worry."

"Yeah well you're making her a miserable kid. When I try to talk to her about her problems, she flinches. Even her mother has talked to me about it and I fully agree with her."

"I would like you to refrain from mentioning her in this argument. My Karlie has nothing to do with-"

"YES SHE DOES!! Even though my ex-wife and we didn't work out, it doesn't mean I lost respect for her. She is the mother of my child and I will not let you disgrace that fact with your filthy words." The Stepmom blinked.

Unknowing to little Karlie, the tension felt like it grew oddly distant. In one soft smile it was completely gone. The Stepmom sighed, placing a hand on her cheek.

"Y-You're right. I didn't mean it like that! I just want Karlie to like me, but also make sure she doesn't hurt herself when she has an accident. I-I guess I've been too hard on her." The dad deeply sighed.

'I felt bad for her, but don't fully trust her. This has happened way too many times.' He wished it would be over and that his new wife would just stop...but she wouldn't for a long time.

"It's...fine...just let Karlie be a kid. She's about to go into third grade and I don't want anyone to question if she's normal in the head."

"Of course honey. Now why don't you get ready for bed, will I make you some tea for us." The dad felt his cheeks turning red. He didn't know if it was out of love or frustration towards the woman.

"Okay..." With that he walked off towards the shared bedroom.

Once he was out of sight, her face turned cold. The emotion that was there was completely gone, and was replaced with nothing. As if she didn't feel emotions at all. Slowly making her way to one bedroom: Karlie's bedroom.
