I made my way down to the warehouse, which was a huge building that sat on a 30 acre plot in the suburbs.

Here was the base of all operations. Training, fighting, meetings- you name it and it happened here.

The building where we all lived was another base of operations for the higher ups. More so for the people in the immediate circle.

As I got there I changed into my workout gear and headed to the ring to oversee some new recruits.

After watching them for a little, I made my way to the center of command, where some underbosses were discussing plans about new casinos.

My role in the mafia wasn't to guide or to lead a set of people. It was more so in the background which included me performing surgeries, ensuring all of our businesses ran smoothly, and running intelligence for the corporations.

I may not be an underboss or consigliere, but people knew exactly where I stood- and realistically, it was higher than both of them.

My life wasn't always like this. The mafia, fighting, enforcing- it wasn't never part of my "perfect" life plan.

Prior to my quarter life crisis- I was actually happy. I was in med school at Harvard, had a good family life, and continued to work hard to succeed.

It wasn't until my life got flipped that I got a taste of the dark side.

A small part of me wishes I could get it back. I'd give anything to.

But the other part of me knew he was dead.

Which was probably better for everyone.

...

Aila

I couldn't believe the afternoon we had. Getting soaked, bruised and scraped up definitely wasn't on the itinerary to celebrating this amazing day.

As much as the douchebag was cold to us, I was grateful he helped bandage Sofia and I up.

We finally made it home to our small apartment on the lower side of town.

My goal was to upgrade as soon as I get a higher paying job.

Oh right, I was officially unemployed. I needed to look for a job asap.

As we settled in, I gave Sofia a shower and put her in warm clothes, and then wrapped her in a think blanket.

Making sure she was satisfied, I then went to take a shower. As the warm water hit my arm, I instantly winced.

Water on a open wound wasn't it.

I quickly hurried and then changed into warm pajamas as well. I reheated some pasta from the fridge and split it between Sofia and I.

Soon our tummies were full, and before we knew it, we both fell asleep.

...
It was now morning, and rays of the sun were beaming through the living room windows.

I sat up from where Sofia and I snuggled on the couch. After making sure she was safe in a pillow fort and blankets, I got up to start to make breakfast.

It was then I noticed I had a slight sniffle.

Don't tell me I got sick from that stupid rain. I rolled my eyes. I'm stronger than this.

Today was day one of job hunting. I had to find a place that was willing to give me experience since I didn't have any, besides when I was in school.

I made some avocado toast with smoothie. I don't know how Fia didn't wake up, but after all she's my child. She could sleep for days.

I used to as well.

Until I became a mother.

Every single noise woke me up. The mother bear instincts never leave you.

I soon saw her shift and rub her eyes. I made my way over to her and bent down to her level. "Good morning, sweet pea" I told her as I kissed her on the cheek.

She moved into my arms and cuddled closer to me. "Morning mommy" she told me as she laid her head on my shoulder.

That's something I'd never EVER get tired of. Her cuddles. Many people assumed it was a sign of attachment or clinginess.

But for a parent, it meant much more. It meant that they felt safe in your arms, and wanted to stay there to absorb that endless comfort.

I wouldn't change that.

I picked her up as I rocked her in my arm. I played out some food for us both, and sat down in a stool. We both are our breakfast in silence.

Not without me sneezing a few times.

"Mommy sick?" she asked me, as she looked up to me with her big brown eyes.

I looked down to her and smiled. "Don't worry, mommy is okay" I reassured her.

"Mommy need to see a doctor" she said in a serious tone, with smoothie all over her face.

I chuckled. "Silly goose!" I told her as I wiped her face with a napkin. "Don't worry, sweet pea."

When we were done, we both got ready for the day. I did a quick clean up around the house, and before I knew it- Ms. Rosie was at our door.

"Good morning, sweetheart" she told me as she set down her coat and bag. I gave her a small hug.

"Good Morning, Ms. Rosie." I told her with a smile.

"So today is the big day! You go out there and show those companies what you're made of." she told me encouragingly.

I smiled. "For sure. Thank you." I told her as I sneezed.

"Of course honey" she said with a worried look. "Honey, are you feeling well?" She asked with a concerned face.

I nodded. "Yes, don't worry, I'll be fine" I told her encouragingly.

"There's leftovers in the fridge for lunch and some cash on the counter for a treat! Hope you guys have fun!" I told them as I gave Fia a small kiss on her head.

"Feel better mommy"

"Thank you baby"
