Aila
As I knocked, I heard a deep voice mutter "come in". I took that as my que and opened the door.As I opened it, I made contact with the person sitting behind the desk. My breath got stuck in my throat at who was there and my heart was about to beat out of my chest. The world started to spin.
Grey.
God fucking help me. What did I do to deserve this?
The last time we spoke I messed up. And pissed him off. I felt like a complete idiot and definitely owed him an apology.
But wait, was I in the wrong room? The name in the front certainly didn't say Grey.
I was literally shaking.
"Th-this seems to be a mistake. I-I should go. I muttered out before I turned on my heel and made my way out."
Before I could he cut me off. "Aila" he said in a firm tone.
I stopped in my tracks and turned around, my hand still on the handle of the door.
"Come in and take a seat." he basically commanded
Fuck.
I took a deep breath and closed the door. I then grabbed the seat in front of his desk, not making eye contact with him. My eyes focused everywhere but his.
As I did, I noticed the office was similar to Ronans, with the same layout. However this one had much darker accents.
No picture frames lined the desk like Ronan's. The only "decorations" were the diplomas plastered in frames on the wall behind his chair.
I tried my best to calm myself down. I mean what's the worst that could happen? That he fires me?
Ok maybe that is the worst because I've already proven to have had bad luck finding a job. So I kinda need this one.
"Aila"
Plus if I didn't have a job, I wouldn't be able to pay my bills or feed my daughter. I'd probably end up homeless. My mind ran in all different directions.
"Aila" he shouted, startling me. I finally made eye contact with him, and stared into his dark eyes. I expected them to be cold and dark, but they softened when they looked at me.
His demeanor didn't though.
"You zoned out for a while." his gruff voice spoke out.
"Sorry." I muttered looking down again. He continued to stare at me for a few minutes. In his eyes, I could see the clogs turning until he finally spoke.
"Take a deep breath." he instructed.
I looked at him with a confused look.
"Now." he said in a firm tone.
Yes sir.
I'd be lying if I didn't get butterflies in my stomach.
What was happening to me?
"I'm fine" I told him as I glared at him back. I probably looked pathetic, but I'd be dammed if I let him see though me.
"You're shaking body says otherwise." he said in a daring tone.
Damn my crippling anxiety.
I sighed and took a few deep breaths. The tingling in my body seemed to ease up a bit, but I still felt nervous.
"Good." he said in a firm tone. "Let's get down to business."
It was different seeing him so strict and cold. The few times I ever interacted with him, he was still emotionless, but showed a some sort of humanity.
I guess I fucked up enough to where he wants to make my life hell now.
Great.
"Working here is a privilege. Ronan saw some potential in you and therefore you can't let us down. I'm sure he gave you the spiel on everything. I'll give you the rules.
1. Don't be late. It's life and death here and people are depending on you.
2. Do as I say, not as I do. You'll be working in the trauma unit with me majority of the time. I don't wait, so make sure you're always on my six.
3. There are times we have to go out in the field. Again, follow my directions and you'll be alive. That's it."
This seemed more of a power play than so called "rules". But I dare to open my mouth.
"Any questions?" He asked as he sat back in his chair and crossed his big arms over his chest, waiting for me to say something.
I shook my head. "Not at the moment, but I'll let you know if I do. Thanks Grey. I look forward to working with you." I told him, trying to be nice. He was now officially my boss.
His eyes darkened. "It's Dr. Cavallharo for you."
I nodded. "Noted". Two can play at that game.
"Good, now leave." he said as he dismissed me.
And I scurried out of there.
