In my hand were a couple of copies of my CV. I hadn't had time to call and schedule meetings in advance, so hopefully this would do.
Usually out of grad school, people would work in hospitals where you'd get the most amount of experience. Whether it's floating through different floors or traveling through different specialties- there wasn't any other place to learn the most than the hospital.
The problem is I could afford to work 12 hour shifts. Not when I had a small child. Don't get me wrong, Ms. Rosie was a god send, but she too was getting old and I couldn't ask her to watch Sofia for 12 hour shifts at a time.
I couldn't afford to hire a nanny either- not that I trusted people easily.
So this was the best option. I was hoping to get a job, preferably a 9-5 in the beginning until she gets a bit older, just to settle in for a bit
I visited a few private practices and left my resumes with the front desk staff. A few offices looked promising, but I had yet to encounter one that gave me any intention back.
I wouldn't loose hope yet. Sometimes you have to go through 20 bad apples to find 1 good one.
I continued my trek up and down the street, visiting more offices and leaving my resume with them.
Someone had to show interest. I had hope.

Contrary to popular belief, I was a morning person. Nothing fueled me more than getting up early, working out and being productive first thing in the morning.
It gave me a routine. Once that I stuck to and made me content.
Except last night was a bitch.
Ronan and I spent about six hours in the operating room performing surgery on a patient. He was a close friend of ours who had hundreds of tiny shrapnel stuck in his thoracic cavity. It took us hours to make sure every little piece was out as well as make sure everything was functioning properly.
Of course it didn't, when his heart started to fail, causing Ro and I to jump quick into action.
4am rolls around and I'm now heading into bed.
Which wouldn't suck. Unless your alarm woke you up at 5am.
Many would hit snooze and just go back to sleep. But thanks to my high functioning circadian rhythm, it wasn't possible.
So instead I accepted the defeat and carried on with my morning. It didn't help that my entire body wanted to shit down from restlessness, but I still had to push through.
It was about 8 am now, and my body could barely hold up. I needed caffeine.
I usually try to withhold from caffeine, but I'd have to skip that mentality today. If I wanted to perform, I needed to stay awake.
Which is why I currently stood in a coffee shop. Never in my fucking life did I think I'd end up here.
It looked like happiness threw up all over it.
But in reality, I'd spend more time going back to my apartment. So I figured I'd bite the bullet and just go here.
Let's see how this goes.
I ordered a double espresso. As I waited for my order, I stood back and analyzed the people around me. Some sitting in chairs with laptops, others on the phone, and some striking up conversation with each other.
I wonder what I was like for people to live normal lives.
The door chimed and another set of people walked in. I turned my attention briefly to them, and saw it was an older woman holding a young child's hand.
"Grey- double espresso" the barista shouted my name. I went up and grabbed it, leaving a few dollars in the tip jar.
I took a small sip, and as the torque taste hit my mouth and entered my esophagus, it immediately did wonders.
I gave the lady a curt nod before I turned to make my way out.
A small tug on my black coat stopped me abruptly.
I looked down and met a pair of big brown eyes. Familiar ones. It was then, that the small bandage on the small child's forehead caught my attention.
It was the little girl from yesterday. The one whose mom bumped into me.
"Hi mister." she said in a small, shy tone. I could tell she was very apprehensive. My tall frame towered over hers- analyzing her.
She was brave, for sure.
"Hello" I responded.
"F-fank you for fixing me and my mommy up yesterday" she said very confidently. She stumbled over a few of the words, but I was able to understand them.
I nodded. "You're very welcome." I told her as my brows furrowed. Where was her guardian and why were they not watching her.
"You made my ouchie better. Are you able to fix my mommy's ouchie?" She asked as she turned her head to the side, curious.
"I already did, yesterday"
She shook her head. "No. She has anotherrr ouchie" she said as she annunciated her words more, with a serious and concerned expression.
"Where's your mom or grandma or whoever you're with?" I asked her as I bent down to her.
She looked around and pointed to the older woman. "Ms. Rosie. But she's ordering food."
As if she heard our conversation, Ms. Rosie made her way over to us."Sofie, honey, don't bother this poor man." She said as she came to hold her hand. "I'm so sorry, sir" she told me apologetically.
I'm not good with emotions like this.
"He's gonna help mommy feel better" she said excitedly as she clapped her hands.
Wait- what? The fuck?
"Hi, ma'am, I'm Grey." I introduced myself to the woman. "I happened to bump into her and her mom yesterday." I had to introduce myself before she thought I was a creep or something.
"Ohh yes." Ms. Rosie said with a small smile.
"So-so are you gonna make her feel better?" the little girl asked me, as she crossed her hands together.
Fuck. Why did I always get myself into weird situations.
I couldn't say no. God forbid she starts crying and then I seem like a bad guy.
I let out a deep sigh. "Fine, kid. Here's my number." I said as I handed my number to the lady.
"Call me whenever."
She smiled brightly. "Thank you, sir. She could use it. She's not doing well at all, but is denying it." The woman mentioned. A hint of worry crossed her face.
I nodded. And headed out the door.
What the fuck has gotten into me.
