Both of them were still very shaken up. As much as I didn't want to admit it, a weird feeling of protectiveness stirred inside me.

We took both of them to the car. I already called one of the cleanup crews to take out the trash. They should be there soon.

As we led them to the car, both of them sat in the back. Ronan placed Sofie on one side and began to assess her injuries, while I did the same with Aila.

As I sat her parallel so I could asses her injuries, I noticed she was still in a severe state of shock. She looked somewhat broken.

I used both of my hands and passed it through the surface of her scalp, feeling for any tenderness or bruising. Her wince when I got to one side told me that there was.

Keeping that in mind, I tested her for a concussion as well. Of course, she failed, which told me she had one and it needed to be taken seriously.

She seemed out of it. As I was asking her questions, her responses were much slower than normal. This was a problem. Her adrenaline was still high, meaning it was preventing her from feeling everything.

I continued to check her over, feeling over her ribs, torso, and all her limbs, looking for a reaction. When I got none, I began to stitch up the side of her head.

I looked over to Ronan where he too was checking over Sofie. He was stitching up her forehead while she was looking at him closely.

Aila followed my eyesight to Sofie and immediately grabbed her hand as if she needed physical confirmation she was okay.

"How is she?" I asked Ronan.

He brushed some pieces of hair away from her face to show us the cut he stitched up. "She's got a cut on forehead and some slight bruising. Don't worry, she'll be okay."

Aila looked at them in complete shock. "How are you so good with her? She's usually super shy." she asked him bluntly.

Ronan smiled to her. "I have one of my own."

She nodded. "Thank you." and then looked to me. "Both of you."

"I don't know what we would've done without you."

"It's our job."

"So I've already organized for the both of you to stay at a nearby hotel for a few nights. It's already paid for, has top tier security and is still close to the city." I started.

She cut me off. "Thank you, but I can't accept that."

"Too bad, you don't have a choice. Until we can make sure that asshole is behind bars, you need to stay low."

The truth was, in our custody, he wished he was going behind bars. When we were done with him, he wouldn't even be recognizable. We needed to make sure he had no other accomplices or anything. Also, some space away from everything would help the both of them calm down.

"I'm gonna take you up and you can pack an overnight bag for the both of you guys. Pack for a few days."

She nodded and looked down. "Yeah"

I did as said and made my way with her up to her apartment. Ronan stayed down with Sofie who was about to crash any minute. Surprisingly, she felt safe in this stranger's comfort. It was probably the dad mode.

As we approached her door, I could see her becoming more hesitant by the moment. Her face was filled with apprehension, afraid to unveil what was behind the walls.

When we walked in, I was shocked. I expected the place to be ransacked, but it was spotless. Nothing had changed out of place since I was here a few days ago. The only thing that caught my attention was a piece of paper on the counter.

I walked up to it and read it.

You will be mine.

I scoffed. And soon, you will be dead. Dumbass.

I grabbed it before she could see and put it in my pocket.

A couple of minutes later, she came out with a medium sized duffle.

"I think I'm ready."

I nodded and grabbed it from her. "Thanks"

"Don't mention it."

We got to the car and Sofie was knocked out in Ro's arms. He gave us a small smile. "Her adrenaline probably wore off. Do you want to hold her?" he asked Aila.

She nodded and he passed her over carefully.

"I know all of this is completely nerve wracking as a parent, but trust me when I say you both are going to be okay. She's not going to remember much anyway. Just take a deep breath and relax." Ronan told her softly.

She looked grateful for his words of wisdom. "Thank you so much." She breathed out.

"Anytime." he smiled back to her.

In this moment, I was thankful he stepped in. My mind was going a million miles an hour, and comfort wasn't really in my vocabulary right now.

We made it to the hotel and got them settled. We made sure they were safe and everything was at it should've been.

Aila turned to us. "Thank you guys so much, for everything. I mean it. I wish I could thank you more but I can't even think right now."

"Our pleasure." Ronan smiled.

"Anytime." I replied to her.

"Give us a call if you need anything else. We'll stay in touch with you soon."

"Thank you" she said with a small smile.

"Goodnight."

...

Deep down, a sense of protectiveness washed over me when it came to them. I didn't know what it was nor could I explain it.

Or where It even came from.

I wanted nothing more than to take shield them from their demons as I have enough experience.

But something else inside me was also afraid. I didn't want to put them in more danger. I needed to detach myself.

We have two completely different lifestyles. They didn't need my baggage as well.

I had to distance myself.
