Athena sat sleepily on the armchairs near the window without her headphones for a change, swivelling her head when Dani had entered Illyana already making a racist comment towards the girl.
"Jeez, Illya, will you just... leave her alone?" Sam defended Dani, clearly sick of Illy's childish behaviour.
"No. It's okay." Dani brushed it off. "Standing Rock." That's a good one. More original than "Pocahontas." That was huge in fifth grade. You don't scare me. My dad told me about bitches like you." Dani approached Illyana getting in the angry girl's face.
"Oh. Well, here. Why don't you show us on the puppet... where Daddy touched you?" Illyana held up lockheed, Dani taking the puppet causing both of them to break into a fight Sam restraining Illyana, Rahne with Dani.
"Hey, guys, come on!" Sam shouted annoyed, struggling to hold Illyana. Normally Thena would be laughing at the situation but instead she became unfocused hearing the voices in her head grow louder real almost.
"You keep my father's name out of your mouth, bitch! You don't know anything about me." Dani's voice floated within Athena's head but one voice became clearer.
"Do you know anything? Sixteen years old and doesn't even know her power. Seems like that mutant period should've kicked in by now." Illyana argued back, the voices increasing causing Athena to wince as she flipped herself over the chair standing up silently.
The girls continued arguing, Athena feeling the air thin, the voices suddenly going silent. The paranoid girl didn't stick out for the end of the argument instead rushing out of the room to her dorm.
She threw her covers over her head hoping to drown out the noise, blasting her headphones loudly.
A loud bang woke Athena up, hearing the sound from Sam's dorm louden. She sprung up pulling her headphones off to rush down the corridor. Sam's dorm was shut but Athena could hear him instead, his loud yells echoing through her ears.
"Sam? Sam, what's going on?" Athena knocked loudly hearing the banging stop, Sam's loud breathing the only sound remaining.
"Go away Athena, please." Sam spoke softly, his voice weakened as Athena heard him slid against the wall. Athena ignored him sliding the door open spotting the crumbled boy in the corner of his room. His desk had been flipped and his books spread everywhere, Sam crying hopelessly in the corner.
Athena quickly dropped to the floor wrapping her arms around Sam. She had never seen him look so vulnerable, her best friend sobbing into her chest.
"Sam what's wrong?" She pulled his head up, cupping his cheeks. Athena paled when she noticed more bruises lined the back of Sam's neck, bruises that never appeared when he was training.
"You're right Thene, i'm- i'm having horrible visions." He took in a breath, "Something ain't right, we ain't safe anymore." Athena ran her hands over Sam's hair, comforting him.
"I know Sam. I know." She hugged the boy tightly, electricity coursing through her eyes angrily. Athena sat with the stressed boy for a moment longer before Sam regained himself.
The southern boy pulled apart wide enough so that the two teens were face to face. Athena's eyes softened when she noticed where Sam's gaze had fallen to. The boy stared at Athena's lips desperately before his hands reached to the back of her head pulling the girl in.
Their lips connected as Athena's eyes grew wide, Sam's hands intertwining in Athena's hair. Sam deepened the kiss until Athena broke it apart to catch her breath. Sam quickly retracted pulling himself away from her, as his eyes flew wide open.
"Sam-
"Athena, I'm so sorry- God I'm so sorry." Sam stuttered his hands raking his hair shakily. Before Athena could get another word in, the taller boy had already sprung to his feet leaving the room embarrassed.
Athena didn't exactly disagree with Sam's impulse, but she knew he was upset and she didn't want to take advantage of that. The pair had been stuck together for the past year and they had grown close so why was it such a bad idea for the pair of them to get together.
Athena knew. She knew why. Sometimes she couldn't control her powers, and Sam was the one person she would never want to hurt in the world.
The girl scrambled up headed back to her room calming her nerves, rings of light flowing through her skin. She quickly dig through her belongings pulling out a book as distracted herself scanning the pages.
But Athena eyes wouldn't budge the pages blurred as she attempted to focus on the words. Tiredness overwhelmed Athena, her head falling onto the book in front of her. She begun drifting asleep, her best friend stuck on her mind.
