You slammed the door to the temple of the one with the force of your whole body after you stumbled through the door with Martin. Perhaps you futilely thought it could keep the wads of daedra away for a moment to buy you more time. Perhaps you thought it would keep you both safe- keep him safe.

You didn't waste any time that you hoped you could buy, and scrambled further into the temple- almost tripping over several times as your body ran off pure adrenaline and desperation. Martin followed after you, coming up behind you. You turned to him, scared yet holding onto hope, he had said he had a plan- he seemed so sure of it yet someone felt off. You just had to trust him, to help him again- it would all be okay.

He grabbed ahold of your hands, keeping close by to you as he called out your name.
"(F/n), listen to me-" he begged you, and he swore he could see the fear flick into your eyes as he spoke to you. "I do what I must to. I cannot stay to rebuild Tamriel-"

Your vision began to blur as he spoke, dread creeping up your spine as you tried to deny what he was trying to tell you, that maybe it was going to be okay. "No... no-" you mumbled, reaching out to his face to hold him.

"That task must fall to others. To you." He tried to ground you, holding your face as he watched you break down in front of him. He was scared, truth be told- scared to leave you alone, he didn't want you to feel pain.

Tears began streaming down your face as it donned on you what he was saying, what his plan might be. It felt cold, your hands trembling as you held him, sobbing and crying out to him in hopes that maybe he wouldn't do it. Gods know you'd rather go back out there and beat Dagon with your own two hands than let go of Martin.

You sobbed loudly, barely able to see him while your brain shut down, hoping for protection. Desperate to comfort you, he pressed his forehead against yours and held your hand to his chest, letting you feel his heartbeat and he pulled you close- knowing it would be the last time. Your tears fell on his, unable to hold back the hics and sobs- unable to calm down.

Your skin felt like it was on fire, your lungs short on air as you struggled to breathe, reduced to a mess in front of the person who you hoped would never see you weak. You felt his heart beat, and curled up in the safety of his arms, hoping he would not let go.

"Farewell (f/n)," he tried to remain calm as he spoke, his heart shattering into a million pieces as he felt you cling onto him harder, the sobs that go louder as your grip on him grew stronger. "You've been a good friend in the short time that I've known you-"

"No, Martin no please what are you saying? You're not going anywhere please just stay-" you cried out, pulling down on him as you tried to keep him there, to reason him out of this.

"I love you, I will always be with you, please just trust me (f/n) you know I could never thank you enough for what you've been to me-"

"You can't go, we still have so much to do together- I have so much to tell you it can't just stop here?" You said between sobs, and he held you gently as you knelt on the floor. He did his best to wipe the tears from your eyes, caressing your cheek as he did.

It hurt, gods it hurt, he never wanted this, he didn't want it to end like this and he was afraid to let you go, but knew he couldn't run away.

He pulled you in for the last time, kissing you gently and feeling you break down further against his lips- barely able to kiss back between the sobs.

"I must go," he said against your lips, finally finding the strength to pull away from you, watching your eyes go wide in horror as you tried to grab ahold of him again.

"No, no no no please-" you yelled, falling over as you tried to grab him- only to miss him as he walked backwards from you, letting go of your hand for the final time.

"The dragon waits." He tried to smile, to give you hope as he stumbled into the centre of the room, the walls suddenly caving in and the roof collapsing as Dagon stepped into the temple. He looked back at you briefly to ensure you were safe, you hunched over narrowly being missed by the debris as you looked at him, terrified.

He could no longer help but sob as he held the amulet in his hands, unable to take in a deep breath before he shattered it, feeling it bind to his soul as he was lifted into the air- being deafened by its magic and blinding light, and yet he could feel its peace, feel the peace of Akatosh as he lost feeling in his body.

You could barely see what was going on, but you couldn't take your eyes off him- praying he would stay in your line of sight- praying that if you didn't take your eyes off him that he would still be there.

"Martin!" You screamed out, watching the scene unfold before you as he started to disappear into the blinding white light the amulet had caused, so grief stricken and fearful that your sobs almost completely ceased for a moment as you watched.

You watched him glance over to you one last time, a calm and peaceful smile on his face before he completely disappeared, a bright dragon appearing in his stead.

Watching as the dragon fought dagon, you looked on in awe as the avatar of Akatosh summoned up all its power as the final effort against Dagon, scared yet amazed of the power the amulet seemed to hold.

What felt like hours passed in seconds, and you watched the avatar bite Dagons neck and banish him back to oblivion- defeating him for the final time.

Yet something was wrong, and your worry quickly returned as it's breathing became laboured, pained...

"Martin?" You cried out, desperately hoping for a response, yet getting nothing in return as you tried to scramble forward.

He flung up his head, letting out a final scream your ears were deafened by a loud cracking sound- the dragon turning to stone before your eyes.

Yet you couldn't see him. Martin was no where to be found- the realisation dawning on you as you felt fear and pain, your body turning cold as your reached out towards the statue.

Perhaps the entire city heard your last scream, perhaps it was then when they all understood.

He wasn't coming back.
