I don't know what was worse. My older brother being dragged down to the bottom of the lake, or the fact that I haven't done anything but stare at the water for the past minute. Meanwhile, everyone around me was doing anything but standing still. It's one thing for a loved one to do something dangerous, and a whole different thing seeing them in danger.

I thought I was paralyzed until Eddie firmly grasped by hand. For his comfort or mine? I didn't know at this point. Everything was so fucking blurry.

Suddenly, Nancy Wheeler stepped onto the edge-- causing another uprisal of panic amongst the teens in the boat.

"Wait! Wait, wait. You're not going in there, are you?" Eddie questioned, making it obvious he thought it was a terrible idea. "We still don't even know what the hell that thing was."

Nancy was clearly not going to be persuaded. She sighed. "Please. Just wait here."

Leaving the rest of us to scream at her in her midst, she jumped off. I shook my head, standing up as if it was going to help seeing through the lake's dark surfaces. I was almost a little impressed, the fact she was so willing to dive in immediately, before his own sister.

Nevertheless, diving in was the only thing on my mind as I counted the seconds, the minutes. My foot touched the edge-- but someone grabbed my arm.

"Sit back down, Harrington." Eddie stared up at me, a twinge of pleading in his irises. "She said to wait."

"I don't give two shits about what she said." I attempted to shrug off his grasp, but it only grew stronger.

"Yeah? Well, now I'm saying wait."

I couldn't help but stare at him-- until I heard Robin speak up. "Angelica, weren't you saying like five minutes ago that you've never even swam?"

"I didn't say never."

With that, I took off my rather expensive sweater and tossed it back straight into Eddie's face, who just glared at me. I held my breath and plunged into the mysterious, and apparently freezing water, ignoring the pleas coming from the boat. Talk about dramatic exits.

But my mind went blank as I desperately held on to the little amount of oxygen I'd drawn into my lungs. I kicked and pushed as best as a person who's only swam a good handful of times can, praying I'd make it to the red glow that couldn't have been anything other than the mother gate.

--- sorry for the switch of pov's and chapter length, just thought it was more fitting for this one <3
