After running for what felt like an eternity, the teens hid under a giant rock, silently wincing at every screech that came from the dark sky above. Both Angelica and Eddie's hands were clammy, causing them to stick together like sappy glue-- they almost couldn't tear them apart. Which wouldn't have been the worst thing in the world, Angel thought.
Everyone was dead silent. As if one ragged breath would send another herd of bats their way.
Once any trace of bat noises ceased, and it was just the distant echo of thunder that continued, the entire group went limp with relief as they began to climb out from under the rock.
"That was so close." Robin sighed, regaining what was left of her composure.
"Too close." Eddie chimed.
Angel wiped at her dripping forehead and immediately returned her arms down over her soaked-through tank, "I swear to God, I almost shat my pants."
"Jesus, TMI." Eddie breathed a mixture of a sigh and a laugh, as his eyes unknowingly fluttered down to the black bralette poking through her top. It was the best laugh he could muster under the circumstances they were in. No one was in a joking mood like they were on the boat, not as Steve muttered a few curses and leaned back onto the rock, clearly riddled with pain from the bites.
"Steve?" Both Angelica and Nancy said in unison, turning their heads back to him as if they were synchronized swimmers.
But the brunette girl stayed put, as Nancy rushed to his side and scanned the wounds. He only groaned and waved her off. Typical.
"You're losing a lot of blood, Steve."
"Nah, I'll be fine."
His younger sister, standing near Robin and Eddie, quietly snorted and rolled her eyes at his blatant stubbornness. He could be stabbed straight through the back and would say the exact same thing.
But Angel watched in awe as Nancy beckoned him to sit. She immediately tore off a piece of her beige sweater and Robin kneeled by her side, continuing her rabies ramble. Angelica only continued to stare while Nancy did what Angel had always attempted at. Even as children, Steve wouldn't let her put a band-aid on his knee after he fell from his bike. Then, she'd always thought he was just being egotistical and was too proud to be taken care of, and while that was still the case, she'd realized he was trying to set some sort of example as the eldest. What example was the question Angelica found herself pondering.
