"Stop. No." Sam slaps Miranda's hand.

"Ow!" Miranda shakes her hand out.

"Stop fucking with the radio." Sam tells her.

"But-- but it's such a terrible song." Miranda whines.

"It... shut up." Sam says, not willing to agree the song on does kind of suck.

"Come on. I mean, don't you-- don't you listen to, like, I don't know, Jimmy Eat World or something? All American Rejects? Coldplay? Death Cab for Cutie? Radiohead?"

"You listen to those?" Sam asks with a small laugh.

"Yeah. Do you?" Miranda asks.

"I don't know. I-I guess." Sam mutters.

"You totally do." Miranda smirks. "You just don't wanna admit that you have the same music taste as me."

"Whatever." Sam rolls his eyes.

"There is one small confession, though." Miranda says.

"What?"

"I only know two Radiohead songs. I also listen to Eminem and Avril Lavigne. Britney Spears is pretty cool, too."

"Okay, well, I don't care. We're keeping this station on, okay?" Sam tells her. Miranda sticks her tongue out at him.

"You don't wanna listen to Avril Lavigne? Really? Come on, dude." Miranda says.

"I-- I've never listened to her music." Sam says.

"Okay, well, today's gonna be a first." Miranda says, unzipping her backpack.

"Randi." He gives her a warning look.

"Sammy." She gives him a challenging look. "You're gonna have to kill me if you wanna stop me."

"I will." Sam insists.

"Can't, remember? First and obvious suspect." Miranda smirks, taking the cassette tape out.

"I know how to make it look like an accident." Sam says.

"Meh. You'd leave some sort of evidence by accident." Miranda clicks her tongue and puts the tape in. "Relax. We can do one of the bands you listen to next."

Sam rolls his eyes and huffs while she puts the music on.

Miranda walks out of the gas station with the sacks full of snacks and drinks.

"Water and trail mix -- without M&M's -- for the health freak." Miranda says, holding the two things out to Sam.

"Thanks." He says, tossing them into the front seat.

"Twizzler?" She holds a piece of the candy out to him.

"No." Sam's face scrunches up. "That shit is disgusting." He scoffs.

"It is not." Miranda argues, pouting.

"It's disgusting. No sane person likes that." Sam says.

"Well, then I guess I'm insane." Miranda says.

"You definitely are."

"Okay, well, nobody likes kale all the damn time either, all right? Or at any point in time."

"People like kale."

"Yeah, weirdos."

"Fuck off." Sam grumbles, putting the gas pump up.

"Okay, next one." Miranda moves around in her seat, attempting to get comfortable again. Sam quietly groans. "Who -- not including college -- is your favorite teacher you ever had?"

"Do you know how many teachers I've had? I switched schools, like, every other week. I'm not even sure I remember all of them." Sam scoffs.

"Well, you would remember your favorite, genius." Miranda remarks. Sam sighs as he thinks back on the multitude of teachers he had growing up.

"I, um... I had a teacher for a couple weeks in ninth grade." Sam starts. "I had told him that-- that I didn't wanna go into the family business like I was supposed to."

"And the family business lie that you used would be..."

"Mechanics."

"Cute."

"Shut up." Sam laughs, Miranda's lips quirking up in amusement, though she tries to contain her smile. "He just... he was the first person that ever let me really know that-- that I didn't have to go into the family business. That I-- that I could do something else, you know?"

"Not firsthand, but, yeah, I get it." Miranda says. "So you picked lawyer?"

"I still wanna help people." Sam says. "I always want to help people. It... that's the only thing I ever really liked about hunting, I got to help people."

Sam glances over at her when she doesn't respond, frowning at the intent look she's giving him.

"What?" He asks.

"You just got slightly less annoying and it's pissing me off." Miranda comments.

Sam laughs.

"Oh, come on. Don't go soft on me now, Popcorn Girl." Sam smirks.

"And there's that smug smirk I hate. Fuck you." Miranda says. Sam laughs, Miranda ignoring the fluttery feeling in her stomach when she hears it.

"Well, uh... thanks for the ride." Miranda says, getting her suitcase out of the trunk.

"Yeah. Yeah, sure." Sam says, shutting the trunk.

"M!" Her mom runs out, quickly followed by her dad.

Sam stands back, smiling a little as Miranda greets her parents. He ignores the pang in his chest, thinking back on how he never had anything remotely close to that.

"And is this Brandon?" Abby asks.

"What? No. No, this-- this is, um--"

"I'm Sam." He shakes the woman's hand. "Nice to meet you both." He shakes Jack's hand. "I just-- she didn't have any car or anybody else to get a ride from so-- so I gave her the ride."

"Well, thank you." Jack tells him.

"Yeah. Yeah, sure, of course." Sam politely smiles.

"Would you like to stay for dinner? You must be starving." Abby says.

"Mom." Miranda mutters.

"The poor boy needs to eat." Abby brushes her daughter's protests off.

"Uh, thank you, but-- but I do need to get back. I-- I have a summer job that starts tomorrow afternoon so I should head back." Sam says. "It was nice meeting you guys, though."

The two parents go inside, taking Miranda's suitcase.

"See you in a few months, Randi." Sam says.

"Yeah. Thanks." Miranda smiles a little.
