CHAPTER TEN
( wishful thinking )
❝ It's a good thing you're not dating me then ❞
"SO YOU'VE GOT A date?"
Ah-ri and Kitty were on the bus on their way to the supermarket. Ah-ri wasn't particularly accustomed to the mode of transportation, seeing as she'd grown up with the luxury of a private chauffeur. But since her parents out of the country, and she lived in the dorms at school, she had to make do with more ordinary means of getting around Seoul.
Initially, the notion of taking the bus had been abhorrent to her. The idea of waiting at a bus stop, the potential lack of hygiene, and the unpredictable nature of people who took public transport were all discomforting.
But as time passed, Ah-ri found it comforting. Watching the cityscape transform as the bus navigated its way through busy streets and quieter neighbourhoods. And with her headphones on, her favourite music would drown out the surrounding noise, while she observed the city in silence— the sights of the place she called home, as well as the sheer number of people. In a world where she often felt like an outsider, it felt normal.
Kitty was the first person she'd ever caught the bus with. If she were with anyone from school, they would've been in a limo, or a taxi.
"I've got a date." Ah-ri nodded.
"You don't sound so happy about that." Kitty observed, narrowing her eyes.
Ah-ri quickly shook her head, "No I am," she lied, forcing a smile. "I mean, look at him. Why would I not be happy?"
She had pulled up Sung Hoon's Instagram page on her and was showing it to Kitty.
"He is very good looking." Kitty agreed, as she scrolled down the page. "How come you usually spend Chuseok with Yuri?"
"My parents are in London." Ah-ri explained. "And they don't really celebrate Chuseok. Too busy working."
"Don't you have any other family here?"
"I don't really know to be honest." Ah-ri shrugged. "It's always just been us. Maybe we have some extended family here, but I wouldn't know."
