I sit on the sofa drinking coffee
While mom is curled up with the dogs.
We're watching Gilmore Girls, our new comfort show.
It had become a natural habit of ours,
Weaving itself into the daily routine.
I'd come home from school,
Turn on Netflix and wait for my mom
Who'd enter once she heard the theme song.
When Lorelai gets coffee,
One of us always asks:
I'm in the mood for some coffee.
Do you want some?
We both secretly hoped our relationship
Mirrored Lorelai and Rory
Being practically best friends
Rather than mother and daughter.
But we both knew we were
Emily and Lorelai.
When they would get into an argument,
I'm quick with a defense,
She's not doing anything wrong,
Emily is being too stubborn
And not communicating her feelings.
My mom is quick with a rebuttal.
Lorelai is being equally stubborn.
Emily loves her,
She just doesn't know how to say it.
We ease into a silence
Where unspoken words are exchanged.
We look at each other with a new understanding.
Do you want some more coffee?
