evermore

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗡𝗘𝗫𝗧 morning, Mayu woke up earlier than Tanjiro. Instead of waking up the boy, she decided not to bother him and just let him sleep. After all, Mayu still has some unfinished business in the town, so she will need to go back.
On top of that, Mayu already asked Tanjiro last evening to go back to the mountain first and let her finish her deliveries on her own. At first, Tanjiro was against it given that the weather right now is not good, but Mayu insisted on going alone. Tanjiro has no choice but to respect Mayu's decision.
Before leaving, Mayu thanked the old man Saburo and ask him not to bother waking up Tanjiro for her.
"Then I'll be back," Mayu said, waving goodbye and beginning to descend the mountain. She had no idea that the moment she goes back, the once cheerful voices of the Kamado siblings were not to be heard again.

Mayu was able to finished all the delayed deliveries in an hour. With her basket now empty, Mayu heads back to the mountain thinking about going home, but as she nears the Kamado residence, she noticed an unfamiliar man, carrying a sword standing in front of two unconscious bodies that she recognised very well.
Tanjiro and Nezuko.
"Is that blood?" Mayu whispered to herself. Observing the scene in front of her, Mayu defensively readies her bow and arrow while keeping her distance to the unknown man.
Before Mayu could release the arrow from her bow, the said unknown man spoke to her. "Are you related to them?" Mayu slowly nodded cautiousness visible on her face.
"Don't worry, the both of them are alive, just unconscious." The man said to her in an unfazed manner. Mayu walks towards the unconscious bodies of the two Kamado siblings to check if what the stranger is saying is right.
While checking the two siblings, Mayu noticed the change in Nezuko's presence. She looked up to ask the man who looks like he knows what she's thinking.
"If only I had gotten here earlier, maybe your family is still alive and her becoming a demon could've been prevented."
What a way to break the news.
The moment she heard what the man said, she froze. Mayu can only think of one thing: the Kamado family is dead. The family that adopted her is dead. The siblings that she always played with and bonded with are dead. The mother who treated her as if she were her real daughter is dead. How can this happen?
Demons. The man-eating creatures that old man Saburo told them last evening.
She didn't notice the tears that started flowing in her eyes. She just lost her father figure, and now almost all of her found family are killed by a monster that she didn't even know existed until yesterday, and that Nezuko is now one of them?
Mayu just continues to cry silently until she makes eye contact with the unknown man still standing in front of them. Awkward.
"You're awake?"
Mayu shifted her attention beside her, Tanjiro regained his consciousness. Mayu gave him a gentle smile telling him that she knew and that it was going to be fine.
"Go see an old man named Urokodaki Sakonji who lives at the foot of Mount Sagiri. Tell him that Tomioka Giyu sent the two of you."
Tanjiro said nothing while protectively hugging the unconscious Nezuko. Mayu just stared at him, noting to remember the swordsman's name.
"Your sister should be fine because the sun isn't out today, but don't let her out into direct sunlight."
Just like that, the strange swordsman named Tomioka Giyu just disappeared.

Burying the dead bodies of Kamado Kie and the rest of the Kamado siblings took a toll on Mayu, not only physically, but also emotionally and mentally.
She can't imagine how difficult that must be for Tanjiro. Mayu could not help but be proud of the older boy. Tanjiro truly is an older brother through and through.
After burying the family in front of the yard, Tanjiro takes Nezuko's hand while Mayu collected her remaining arrows, and together they found themselves leaving the house and make their way to the mountain, where they're going to start a new journey.
𝗧𝗔𝗜𝗦𝗛𝗢 𝗦𝗘𝗖𝗥𝗘𝗧𝗦:
• mayu was embarrassed when she saw giyu looking at her when she was crying.
• mayu was shaking when she was burying the dead bodies. one: because of the cold weather, two: because she can't believe they're dead.
• giyu was fazed when he saw mayu aiming her bow at him (give this man a break, he almost lost his head because of tanjiro's hatchet).
𝐍𝐎𝐓𝐄:
• oh good lord— one year? it's been a year, i am truly sorry.
• i am going to revised some of it, but i doubt the writing style would be better <3
