Nona was at her parents' house, watching the game with her brother. During each game, her, Kiara, Lacey, and Margot would have a conference call about the plays and stradegies layed out on the court.
"Let's go, Warriors!" Lacey cheered through the phone.
They were ahead by 6 points.
"Yo, Steph finna take this." Lacey said.
"He's definitely top dog. That's for sure. If anyone takes it, it's him." Nona agreed.
"Totally, but- Oh snap." Kiara said in awe.
"Oh my God!" Nona cried as she watched over and over. Him hanging from the hoop and dropping, viciously, into the court floor. His leg snapping each way as he cries in pain. Bouncing off the floor and onto his head.
There was a constant ringing coming from Nona's front pocket. She looked down, realizing her emergency phone ringing off the hook. She quickly answered to the incoming call from Craig.
"Oh my God, Craig! Is he okay?!" She asked frantically.
"Get over here now! I know you're out here! Right?!" He said full of hope.
"I'm on my way."
Although Nona Rose lived in Los Angeles, she often traveled to San Fransisco to see family.
Rushing to the game, she rushed in, meeting Craig at the entrance. He placed a VIP pass around her neck as they went out to the court. Walking, she caught a glimpse of his wife as Ayesha gave off a worried but confused look.
Nona ignored it, feeling no previous feelings for Stephen as she did in high school. They pushed through the crowd and she knelt down to his body. She was face to face with the only man she ever loved.
"What do we have to do?" The coach asked.
Nona stuttered to answer in the presence of her favourite basketball team. She made the decision to do it herself. After locking eyes with him for a second, she looked down to his leg and placed it straight. She cringed at his painful cries. They handed her a pillow and she placed it gently behind his head. He sighed in relief, laying his hand on hers. She paused for a minute as he locked eyes with her. She snapped herself back into reality and stood up.
"Place him on the gurney." She ordered.
Everyone rushed to follow suit. They rushed him to the back, and she stayed right by his side.
"Im tired." He sighed as his eyes closed.
"No! Wake up Steph! Don't even start! You have to stay awake! You could go into a coma or die or something! I forgot! But it's like you're giving up. And you're giving up on Ayesha and Riley. Riley needs you. Stay awake. Talk to me." Nona shouted.
"Who found you?" He asked.
"What do you mean? Craig found me." Nona replied.
"Is this what you do now?" He questioned.
"Yes. And this is what you do now." She stated the obvious.
"Yea, but are you staying in the back with me?"
"No, Ayesha is coming right?"
"No....." His words began to slur.
"Stephen!"
"Nona Rose." He teased, causing her to smile. "She's Nona Rose. She came down from the N.O... And you already know... What's goin' down... When I see that pretty smile. Ms. Rose. I mean Ms. Prescott. No matter what happens... You'll always be my little mascot." He sang the song written for the young couple years ago.
Nona laughed and blushed, still no feelings. The only thing she was thinking of was how much she missed her friend. Her best friend.
"It's so good to see ya smile again. I can't believe it's you. Out of all people."
