NONA
I woke up and Dell was gone. I got up and heard running water from downstairs. Assuming he was in the kitchen, I found my way around the house and saw him cooking.
"Good morning, Chef Curry." I yawned.
"Hey, Nona!" He jumped. His actions appeared to be quickening the more he spoke to me. "How'd you sleep? Are you okay? Was the bed okay? I wasn't too loud? Did I snore? Did I wake you? Are you hungry?"
"Oh God, Wardell Stephen Curry, boy tone it down!" I shouted.
He pouted at me and I sighed shaking my head.
"We aren't strangers. Yes, we are exes. But you are also my friend. You are forever my best friend. And I would really like to get my normal best friend back, because who ever this is, is making me uncomfortable. Jumping, and rambling, and worrying, and stuttering, being awkward, like you got somethin' to hide. What's wrong, Dell? Stephen Curry what is wrong?" I whined.
He stepped back, towards the counter, placing the silver spoon down. He gulped before taking a deep breath. "I, uh, I just don't feel like I know you..... But then I feel like I used to know you.... But then I just want to get to know you. Who you are now... I know I have nothing to hide.... besides my feelings. It's kinda like that day.... we were 15. I took you to the movies. I had spent all night, thinking of why I couldn't get to sleep. And when I saw I realized the you were always in the back of my mind. And when we went to the movies, we saw the Poltergeist. You were scared at first. You hated suspense." He chuckled, his smile soon fading away. "But when the actual scary part came on, you laughed. I remember replaying that laugh over and over. It made me kinda melt inside. I felt this warm feeling and I kissed you. I kissed you for a long time. And things happened.... with protection but that was our first time.... together. And ever since then, I've always loved you. I never really forgot about you. That thing you taught me to do on the court. Find that thing that gives you butterflies and play it out. That laugh is what I replay every time."
I was a bit speechless. That never happens.
"I don't know what you're telling me Steph. What am I supposed to think?" I couldn't process everything correctly. But I felt something come off me and something kept telling me what to say. "It's okay. I love you too. But this shouldn't change anything. We were best friends back when... we'll always be best friends. Best friends do best friend things. So we can hang out and talk. We can go have lunch and laugh. Go to the movies and have popcorn fights. I'm still me. I haven't changed at all. Same friends, same job, same family, same dog, same family address, same everything. Only thing that can change is my appearance. But my heart will never change."
He smiled, causing me to smile but his faded once more.
"But what if it's deeper than that? What about Riley and Ayesha?" He asked frantically.
"That was my question to you. You got a kid. And a wife. But if you want, I can either leave and get you someone else who can do your phys. therapy or we both not worry about any of this and just be ourselves around each other. We should trust ourselves. I trust us."
He thought about it for a minute before smiling and nodding.
"Be myself, then I can do this." He smiled.
He walked towards me, wrapping his arms around my neck as I was buried into his chest. I laughed wrapping my arms around his torso. We swayed from side to side and he kissed my temple.
"Nona Rose Prescott Perez!" He whined.
"Wardell Stephen Dell Steph Curry." I laughed.
"Oh you wanna bring nicknames into this? Nana Rosie Scottie Pippins Perez?!"
"Not fair, I had a lot!" I laughed.
"Cuz my best friend finna!" He sang as we laughed.
We spent the whole day just fooling around. He cracked a egg on my head and got it all my hair. I made him wash it and straighten it. We had food fights, pillow fights, and everything in between. We went to the art store and bought this huge ass canvas and a bunch of paint. He took me to my studio out there and we set it put. We had white paper on the floor and I made us step in mud so when walked on the paper it would leave marks. I put the canvas on the wall. I got creative and put cherry and grape kool-aid in 4 huge water guns. We started spraying it all over the floor and canvas until Stephen got my back and hen we started a fight. It got competitive and we started throwing paint at each other. It did get on the canvas and the floor which I wanted it too. When we were tired we laid out on the floor and looked a the canvas and floor around us. It was all beautiful. Then with our dirty selves, we went to lunch at Panera Bread. We talked and laughed. He planned to go bowling tomorrow with me, then to the movies, and next week go to the amusement park. We had so much fun and I almost forgot that I had to walk home. But we wanted to see how I was living so I let him come over. I was planing on cooking.(I can't cook but don't tell him.)
We walked into the house, laughing at something stupid he said.
"Why are there so many stairs?" He asked, giggling.
" Cuz there are." I laughed before the lights cut on unexpectedly.
I jumped seeing Kiara and Lacey on the couch.
"Gal, this nigga fine as hell! Where da wifey?!" Lacey joked, her N.O accent just way out there.
"Make us some food. We haven't eaten since earlier. Best friend meet best friends. Kiara and Lacey."
"Lacey... Barker?" Steph asked.
"Yasss, Dell. Get it. I'ma make y'alls food."
