“When I first got here, I found out about the infection the hard way. I came across one of the gas hordes, it's almost as if it follows you, once it sees you, it doesn't stop searching til you belong to it. I lost my leg in the process of trying to escape.” He said with a look on his face that was like he was reliving it. “Trying?” I said holding onto the word. “I told you, it doesn't stop looking for you, until you belong to it.”
“It’s still after you?” I said with a sudden feeling of panic. “No..It’s not my problem anymore.” He said with an almost guilty look on his face. “Come, I'll take you to where I've been hiding out.”
We walked silently side by side as we made the long walk. I looked around, staring at the places I once knew. A sudden feeling of dread came over me as It suddenly hit me that this is my life now.
As we walked on in the silence I shuffled through my bag looking for food or water, I ended up being disappointed, “We can stop by some place to try to find something to eat.” He said, still looking dead ahead, “Where can we get food here?” I said looking up curiously, “I know a still semi standing convenience store.”
After a few minutes of walking I saw one building that wasn’t covered in ashes. “This must be the store.” I thought to myself." I walked ahead of him, setting my hand on the door when all of a sudden he grabbed my wrist. “Not that way.” He said as I yanked my wrist away. He began walking on the side of the building where a narrow path followed.
I had a bad feeling but followed anyway. Just as the seemingly long path ended, he turned heading for the door at the back. I began following him as something caught my eye.
I saw something covered with an old burned tarp. I began walking towards it with my curiosity growing stronger. I yanked off the tarp as ashes flew in my face. My eyes began to water as I started into a coughing fit. Just as my eyes cleared I saw something that caused me to step back. I stood there looking at what looked like a hand made 1900s elevator. It looked like it still had parts missing. "What is he planning on doing?" Just as thoughts began to rush through my head I heard a voice, "Lizzy? Where did you go?" He said as his footsteps got closer.
I stood there not knowing what to do as I heard him walk through the door and stop. "I've been trying to find a way to go back." He said in a clear voice, "How do you know it would work?" I said admiring the elevator. A few minutes passed, he stayed silent. I turned around looking worried.
"The chemical..it talks, it's as if it has a mind of its own." He said rushing the first thing he could think of. I took a step back with an uneasy feeling. "Sometimes when I would be trapped or found by it, it would tell me a way." He said looking down. "Dad.." I said with my guard up. "If I brought someone here.." He said slowly looking up at me. I stood there in shock not knowing how to respond. He took a step forward causing me to stumble back. "But if you help me, we could both go back" He said putting emphasis into it.
I looked him in the eyes as my eyes started to tear up. I spun around running in the opposite direction, running as far as I could. So many different thoughts, different feelings came rushing over as I came to a stop, panting. I turned around to see if he was behind me, that was the moment I realized, I indeed ran far. To a point where I could no longer recognize my surroundings. Panic set in as it began to slowly get darker out.
