I should be working on other things...oops. Lumax has a hold on me once again.
Lukas parked a couple houses down from Max's. "I'll see you tomorrow."
Max didn't budge.
"You okay?" Lukas noticed her staring deeply at her hands.
"I don't want to go home." Max rubbed her face, smudging whatever makeup was left on her face. "I wish I never had to go back."
"Max..." Lukas put a hand on her shoulder. "Do you want to crash at Mike's with me?"
"But tomorrow–"
"I'll bring you home early tomorrow morning. Before anyone knows you're gone." Lukas couldn't keep Max away from home forever, but he could at least give her a few more hours of feeling safe.
"Okay..." Max nodded.
Lukas started driving down the street to Mike's. He felt guilty. Max wouldn't be doing all this sober, he was taking advantage of her. It was selfish, at least partly. Part of him wanted to make her fall in love, part of him just wanted her to feel safe. "Have Neil and Billy been giving you a hard time again?"
"Mhm...as usual." Max put her hands over her face and leaned on the window. "Lukas..."
"Yeah?"
"Why do you like me?"
"Heh, what?" Lukas laughed awkwardly, hoping to disguise his blush.
"You're a good guy, you have a bright future. Why me?" Max moved her hands from her face and looked at him.
"Well...I just...I guess I see your potential." Lukas shrugged. He had to admit that if someone wrote all of Max's traits down, she wouldn't sound too appealing.
Hypersexual.
Afraid of commitment.
Moody.
But at the same time, there were so many good things Lukas liked.
Her smile.
The way she rolls her eyes.
The look she gives when her stomach is full of butterflies.
"I'm a fixer upper, like an old house." Max scoffed.
"Sure, you're an old broken house. You're charming in your own way, and I'd love the chance to fix you up and keep you for generations." Lukas felt his heart swelling, but quickly reminded himself Max was not his.

The next morning Max woke up with a booming headache. It was like aliens were trying to pull her brain out with some sort of raygun. As much as she was willing to stay laying down, she couldn't. She wasn't where she was supposed be. Max sat up and rubbed her face. Why am I in Mike's basement? Max couldn't stand the thought of Lukas' body next to her. So, she closed her eyes and didn't look. But when Lukas stirred and put an arm on her sleepily, she couldn't ignore it anymore. Max shook Lukas. "Get up, stalker. I have to get home."
Lukas rubbed his eyes and yawned. "M'kay, n'kay. I'll take you home." Lukas sat up and yawned again. He had only been asleep for a couple hours. It hadn't been a restful night.
The two teens got up and readjusted the decorative pillows on the couch, before sneaking out the backdoor. Acts like these shouldn't be so easy, but they were. Mike's parents were clueless, always caught up in their complicated marriage. It made their house the perfect central for teenage mischief.
As soon as they got in the car and started driving, Max started. "How the hell did I end up with you?"
"Y-you were drunk..." Lukas felt insecure now, like he didn't know how to talk to her. And admittedly he felt guilty.
