When Max is finally dropped off at the school with Jane she feels weight lifting off her shoulders. But only because 'Bloody Mary' by Lady Gaga is blaring, and she wants her Wednesday moment.
"Let's go find our dates." Jane suggests.
"Yes, let's go find our dates." Max agreed and let's Jane walk off to seek out Abi. Instead of going to look for Lukas, Max admires the goth kids living her Wednesday dream. She would of joined them but they were doing such a good job at recreating the dance. She'd do anything to be one of the weird goth kids. They always seemed to have so much common sense. They'd never get knocked up.
"Max!" Lukas was behind her before she could turn and respond to him calling her name. "There you are."
"Yeah, here I am." She looked him up and down. Black dress pants and the most handsomely boring white button up she had ever seen. At least he dressed up. Very few boys bothered. Making them look terrible besides their glammed dates. "You look adorable." She smiled.
"And you look beautiful." Lukas put a hand softly on the shoulder of her broken arm. "How can you still look so beautiful with a broken arm?"
"Magic, I guess." Max smiled wider. "I need you to keep people from bumping me around. My arm only has a couple weeks of healing left. I don't want it to be snapped in half again."
"I'll keep you safe." Lukas went to swoop in for a kiss then stopped. "Is this okay? To kiss you?"
Max nodded without looking around. "Yes, kiss me."
Lukas leaned back in and kissed her sweetly. He relaxed, and then nearly jumped out of his skin when he felt a hand pulling them apart.
I should of known...
Troy crossed his arms and looked mostly at Max. "Well...what's this about?"
"What? It's not like you or James asked me." Max made eye contact with him, trying to intimidate. "You're here with the twins, remember?"
"It's not about that, babe." Troy sized up Lukas. "I just can't stand the sight of you with him. You belong with real men. Seeing him as if he's just as good as me and James is an insult..." Troy spit on the ground next to them.
Max was sure if she had both arms she would of been arrested. She was about to handcuff herself and walk herself to jail. "Troy, fuck off!" She grabbed Lukas' hand. He was being awkwardly quiet, and shaking. "I don't care who you see, you shouldn't care who I see! Lukas is just as good as any man here! Actually..." She paused. "He's better than you and James. You guys aren't half the man he is!"
Am I finally learning to stand up against assholes or is this what pregnancy hormones are like?
"Oh, really?" Troy was surely seeing red. He was certain he was going to do something crazy. He tilted his head and moved close, snaking a hand around Max's waist. "I didn't know you were such a size snob. I figured it was a stereotype, but if his dick is really bigger than ours, by all means-"
"That is NOT what I meant!" Max's face was burning. She moved away from Troy and felt the safe comfort of Lukas' arms wrapping in his place.
"Leave her alone, Troy. Your date is waiting." Lukas was soft but assertive. Clearly he didn't want to start any sort of physical altercation with someone as crazy as Troy.
"Alright...alright..." Troy backed up and went into a crowd of chatty teenagers. His tone proved he was not going to move past this. He was going straight to James to tell him.
"Are you okay?" Lukas rubbed her back and kissed her cheek.
"Yeah, they don't get to me like they used to...are you okay?" She pulled his still shaking hand up to her lips and kissed it. "You're so much better than them. Don't let their nasty remarks get to you..."
