Lukas was an hour away, trying not to cry while he rested his head against the car window.

Charles kept looking over to make sure he was okay. "There's nothing you can do, buddy. Mom just called and said they are trying to delay the labor."

"I know, but she's still alone now." Lukas sighed.

"She's got your mom."

"Yeah..." Lukas didn't want to be pretentious and say that she needed him. "I'm just worried, I don't want her to be scared."

"I'm sure she'd be scared even if you were there." Charles looked at him sympathetically. "I mean, you offered to talk to her on the phone. She didn't want to."

"Mom says she's mad that I'm not there."

"It's not your fault."

"I know, but I feel bad...and what if I miss the birth of my child?"

Charles shook his head and said, "You're just as paranoid as I was when your mother had Erica. They had to delay Erica's delivery too, because the hospital wasn't equipped for a premature baby– Which your sister also was. When your mom got to the other hospital, it was a long time before she had Erica. I'm very certain You won't miss the birth."

"That's good, but...Max is still probably scared out of her mind."

"Do you want to try calling again?" Charles suggested.

"Yeah..." Lukas took out his phone and called his mom.

"Hello."

"Hey, mom...is Max ready to talk to me now?"

"I don't know, I'm in the hall."

"Why aren't you with her?"

"She wanted to speak to Billy alone."

"...what? Billy isn't there, is he?"

"Yes, she wanted him to stay with her."

"How much morphine have they given her?" Lukas wanted to get there even faster now. "Billy shouldn't be there. Get rid of him."

"He's been a help so far, she seems to want him there...what's the problem?"

Lukas didn't feel like explaining so he just said, "I don't like him being in there with Max. She's vulnerable."

"She wants him in there, the one in labor gets the final say. I'm sorry...do you want me to see if she'll talk to you now?"

"Yes..." Lukas waited while his mom put her phone down and coaxed Max into picking it up.

"Hi..." Max's voice was scratchy from crying and screaming.

"How's my beautiful girl holding up?"

"I have never wanted to die more in my life." Max groaned. "How much longer until you're here?"

"About an hour, do you have Billy there?"

"Yes..."

"Fine...how's the pain?"

"Whatever they gave me slowed the contractions down, but my whole body aches and I'm so scared."

"Yeah..." Lukas frowned. "I'm going to be there soon, okay? Then we'll wait together for you to have the baby."

"I told Billy..."

"Hm, told him what?"

"About the baby..."

"Oh...about the baby maybe not being mine?"

"Mhmm..."

"Well?"
