When Max went back to school on Monday, she had much more on her mind than pregnancy and photos.
Is my brother dating Steve Harrington? When will Charles ever find me a good lawyer? Should I of killed myself by now? What the hell is the point of all this shit?
"Max, there's my girl." Abi wrapped her arms around Max as soon as she saw her. "Stick with someone all day, okay?"
"Yeah, I will...I was just looking for Lukas, actually." Max blushed.
"He's outside the library." Abi looked around to make sure no one was staring at Max. A couple people were but after they snickered, Abi flipped them off. "Things are still a bit...iffy. I deleted the photo off Scott's phone." Abi left out the part where Mike got in a fight with Scott, and that's how she had the opportunity. "People are going to taunt you, most likely...but I'll kill them, okay?"
Max nodded and walked with Abi to the library. "Thank you...you have no idea how impressed I am. I thought my life was over, that I'd just have to hang myself after this."
"No, you're okay." Abi squeezed Max before removing her arm, and letting her rejoin her boyfriend's group. "Lukas, you keep an eye on her."
"I will." Lukas wrapped an arm around Max and squeezed her just as tightly as Abi did. "Good to see you, gorgeous."
"Good to see y–" Max noticed Mike's black eye and had to ask, "what the hell happened to you?"
"Don't worry about it." Mike waved it off.
"Uh, okay..." Max sighed and nudged Lukas. "Can I see you in the library for a second?"
"Yeah, of course." Lukas followed Max into the library and found a quiet, private corner for them to talk in. "What's up?"
"I've been thinking– and honestly going insane with the thinking...we should tell the others today. I need to get it off my chest and out of the way." Max figured telling the gang was a good warmup to finally telling Lukas' parents too.
"If you think you're ready, we can go for it." Lukas pulled her in and kissed her cheek. "should we meet up somewhere after school?"
"Yeah...outside the library, maybe?" Max suggested.
"That works, there's tables outside the library." Lukas nodded. "Actually, I've been thinking of applying for a job at the bookstore."
Max tilted her head and scoffed. "You don't read? They wouldn't hire you."
"Any idiot can pretend." Lukas rolled his eyes. "It's worth a shot, and it's a less horrifying job than fastfood. Plus...I'll get an employee discount. I'll always be bringing you home new books."
Max smiled and pulled him in close to give him a careful hug. Her arm was still healing. She hadn't realized how long it took for bones to heal. "Hope you get it, I desperately need 'Strange Sally Diamond' by Liz Nugent."
"Yeah? Why wait for me to get a job. I'll get it for you this afternoon." Lukas made a mental note and kissed the top of her head.
"Are you my sugar daddy or my boyfriend?" Max joked. "You don't need to waste money on me. I'm pregnant, start saving for hospital bills."
"It's not a waste, your happiness isn't a waste. Books are one of your things. If you stop enjoying your things, you might as well be dead." Lukas kissed her again, he couldn't help himself.
"You're not real, you can't be." Max sighed as the bell rang. "Let's go."
"I'm very real. And speaking of things, I have a thing tomorrow."
