The early morning air was crisp and cold. Dewdrops glistened atop the leaves and the sun shone through the break in the trees as Vanessa trekked through the forest. Only this forest was not the pale and sickly looking one she'd spent the last three days in. No, this was the forest she knew well from when she was a teenager.
This was the forest in which her father would have often taken her, and her sister, to for their early morning walks on the weekends, which told Vanessa one thing. She was dreaming.
"Hurry along now, Nessie." Her father called back, his thick Irish accent barely intelligible and Vanessa couldn't help but chuckle over the thought of the boys trying to understand him. Or even better, Rufus. Who still asked for subtitles anytime he spoke to her.
Twigs and leaves crunched under her feet as she ran along the dirt path, her bright yellow rain boots splashing in the muddy puddles. She missed these days. Missed the feeling of the early morning breeze against her face and in her hair. Missed hearing the patter of the rain against her raincoat on days when they didn't have as much luck when it came to the weather, which given that they lived in Ireland, was most days. She even missed the burn in her calves when they'd walk up the steep hill towards the cliff they liked to stand and look out across the town on.
But most of all, she missed her father. Missed her sister. She missed spending time when them, laughing with them, joking with them. She missed talking about conspiracy theories with her sister which drove her father mad as he was sick of hearing about mermaids. But he never said anything, he was just happy his girls were being civil with each other rather than arguing over who owned the blue t-shirt or who got to sit in the front seat of the car.
Those were all memories Vanessa held dearly to her which is why anytime she dreamt of them, or anything to do with her family, Lucifer stayed well away and allowed her to enjoy the few hours of reminiscing she got to do before she woke up.
Only, Lucifer's father didn't exactly follow along with that consideration as once again he'd invaded Vanessa's dreams in means to talk to her.
"Seriously, Freddy? You can't just come see me like a normal person? The boys already told me that they know who you are... which I find very rude that you revealed yourself to them without me being there." Vanessa began, Chuck refraining from rolling his eyes at her complaining. "I would have liked to have seen that."
"Look, will you just..." Chuck sighed, scratching absently at his beard. "Will you just be quiet for five minutes and let me talk? Please?"
Vanessa just glared, annoyed, at him as she folded her arms. She was rather pissed at Chuck for letting her spend three whole days in Purgatory without coming to get her, and with a demon in her head. As much as she loved Crowley, he had been an absolute nightmare. But despite all that, despite her petty grievances with God himself, she remained quiet and motioned with her hand for him to carry on.
"Thank you." He exhaled, relieved from the silence. Vanessa could be exhausting when she wanted to be, and no amount of power he had could save him from that. "I would have come to see you normally, but I don't think the boys would have appreciated it... Especially Dean, that guy can sure hold a grudge." He chuckled, making Vanessa nod her head a little in agreement.
He had a point.
"Anyway, what I wanted to say is..." Chuck continued. "That you did good with the Leviathans. Real good. You saved lives, a lot of them. You saved Bobby. Saved Dean and Castiel from spending a year in Purgatory. Not to mention you saved a lot of future lives by stopping things ahead of time... All in all, you're doing pretty well. Better than I ever would have imagined."
"Wow, thank you." Vanessa said incredibly sarcastically. "It's so nice to hear how little faith you had in me." She added, touching her fingers with her chest before she rolled her eyes hard enough that they almost rolled out of her skull entirely. "Is that all? Can I enjoy my dream now?"
