"So, nobody here finds this suspicious?" Jade asked as she examined our house, frowning. "I mean, randomly getting a check for a million dollars? Are you sure someone's not plotting to kill us?"

"I don't trust this one bit," Nightfall agreed. "Maybe it's booby-trapped."

"Or maybe you're delusional," Glory offered. "Buuut, given our luck, you're probably right. Everyone, be careful." She held tightly onto Lilly as she slept.

"You guys are ridiculous," Ember said carelessly, tossing her hair.

"And what's the point?" Python agreed in a small whisper. "Aren't we all going to die eventually? I mean, what's the point of living, right? There isn't a goal or anything. Why bother trying to prevent something inevitable?"

We all blinked at him. Glory and I exchanged a worried glance before Nightfall sighed.

"Listen, bud," I finally said. "If you try focusing on what makes you happy, then life isn't all that meaningless. I mean, if you have everyone you love with you, then what could go wrong?"

"You mean, apart from being hunted down and killed and stabbed?" Ember asked. "Yeah. You're right. What could go wrong?"

"Ember, honey, please," Glory muttered, nudging her.

"This place gives me the chills," Jade murmured. "So much happened here."

"Including some good times," I said, looking around, grateful that the majority of our stuff hadn't been moved yet.

"Keyword: some," Ember grumbled, looking around. "So, are we going to walk in or stand here staring?" Suddenly, outside of the house, the bushes shook. I immediately stepped in front of the kids as they turned around.

"I bet there's a demon or some sort of gargoyle in there," Nightfall breathed. The bushes shook more and I slowly herded the kids back. Whatever it was, it seemed small, but still.

Suddenly, Cosmo leaped out into the open, meowing. He seemed starved and weak.

"Cawmo!" Clover suddenly screeched, pushing past me toward him. Cosmo happily let her play with him.

"My cat!" Ember cried, pushing forward as well. "Oh, thank the lord." She picked up Cosmo, who scowled at her but didn't fight. "I thought you died."

"I knew it," Jade said. "Honestly, my first thought was that the men took Cosmo and he most likely drowned somewhere else on the boat, but I guess he escaped the car."

And came all the way back to the only home he knew.

I blinked at Cosmo. He was that determined? Any other cat would've just run off and found someone else, but I guess not this one. The genuine smile on Ember's lips as she hugged Cosmo closer made me feel a little bit happier.

"Just because I don't want you to die, that doesn't mean I for once trust you, let alone love you again."

That happiness vanished. I sighed. "Let's head in. It's getting late." We turned to walk into the house, but then Cosmo started fussing and leaped out of Ember's arm, running back to stand in front of the bush.

"What the hell?" Ember asked, frowning. She reached down to pick him up, but Cosmo snarled and lashed at her, making her pull her hand back. "Why's he doing that?"

Suddenly, another cat emerged from the bushes, its fur silky and silver. She also seemed hungry.

And very pregnant.

"Oh!" Glory said as Jade gasped.

"Ew, Cosmo," Ember said, realizing the cat was pregnant, too.

"Mommy, look!" Clover said, tugging on Glory's pants. "There's another one! Look, Mommy, look!"
