[14] Safe Room

"I don't want to fight," Clearsight said innocently as she reached for her hip, pulling out a pistol and calmly sliding it across the kitchen counter so that it was far away from her. "I just want to talk."

"Don't move," Deathbringer growled.

"Who are you?" asked a new voice. I turned my head and sighed when I saw Grandeur, who jumped at the sight of the pistol.

"Oh, Grandeur, are you?" Clearsight said kindly. "Glory has told me so much about you! I adore you truly."

"I'm glad someone finally recognizes me," Grandeur said before sending Clearsight a warm smile. "Care for some tea?"

"Grandeur, slowly back away," I said, but Grandeur ignored me.

"That'd be lovely," Clearsight said sweetly, casting a smirk in Deathbringer's direction.

"I'll go see what I can find." Grandeur turned and headed for the cabinets, rummaging through them.

"Get the kids and put them in the Safe Room," Deathbringer whispered under his breath to me. "And get in there, too."

"No promises," I whispered back before slipping past him. I didn't get far before Clearsight transferred her gaze to me and grinned. Deathbringer quickly stepped in front of me again, frowning.

I decided to take out my phone and text Jade instead since I knew she'd be up around this time.

Mom: Get all your siblings and bring them into the Safe Room

A few moments later:

Jade: Why? What's happening?

Mom: I'll explain everything later. Just hurry. Don't make me repeat myself

I heard the opening of a door and then multiple other doors. There was loud whispering as Jade ordered the others about, and then Nightfall indignantly talking about how he should be in charge.

"Calling the whole family down here? How smart." Clearsight was giving us that smile that said she was superior and would always be superior.

Deathbringer finally walked up to her, mustering all his courage. I could tell he was trying to be menacing when he stopped in front of her and had to quite literally tilt his head down to look at her.

Clearsight stared back up at him dreamily. "You know what I find amusing?" Clearsight was saying, but I was too focused on using hand signals to try and get the children into the Safe Room as discreet as possible. "Remember that one night after the carnival?" Deathbringer seemed to stiffen. "Do you remember what you said to me?"

Jade crept behind the table, Nightfall, Ember, and Python right behind her, Nightfall holding Clover as Ember held half-asleep Lilly.

I mouthed the word quickly, and Nightfall sent a confused look at Clearsight.

"You told me you loved me," Clearsight said swiftly.

"I was also extremely drunk, so," Deathbringer pointed out as I waved frantically at the Safe Room.

"You said you'd never leave my side," Clearsight continued, ignoring him. "You said I was the only one for you. Do you remember that, Deathbringer?" I tried my best to ignore all of that.

"Just go," I hissed quietly, and they reluctantly obliged. Suddenly, Python froze as his gaze landed on Clearsight.
