Kai had been gone for two weeks. Beomgyu didn't do much but sit in bed and write letters. He barely ate. He didn't even want to leave his room. The only times he would go out was at night to sleep in Kai's studio. The next morning, he would make his way back to the house and repeat the process.
Normally he would cope with alcohol or cheap sex but he knew Kai would hate it.
Soobin and Yeonjun took turns checking on him. They made sure he got food. Their little cousin lost 5 pounds in a week from not eating when he was already too skinny for his height.
Beomgyu did start to eat more. The only person he cared to talk to was Taehyun since he was the one trying to find Kai.
Taehyun narrowed it down to two cities. Through his contacts at the cab company, he knew Kai didn't order a cab the day he left. That meant he had to walk but Kai could go farther than most people. He expanded the perimeter to a 10 mile circle. Kai had already lived in 3 of the five cities that touched the circle so he started with the closest one.
Beomgyu went along after Taehyun couldn't find him for four days. After the 8th day, they determined Kai had to be in the other city.
Kai went out with Felix again as friends. He was taken to a local bar and was told to try all the craft beers. He found the light, fruitty ones to be the best. The darker ones were gross. After getting a bit drunk, Felix made a move. Kai explained he didn't feel that way about him and it got a bit awkward.
He decided to dismiss himself and walk home. Kai could hold his alcohol well but not well enough to properly steal without being caught. He stumbled into a restaurant and ordered the most disgusting thing on the menu. A mac and cheese bacon burger with a side of nachos. That got devoured in 5 minutes. He then ordered a molten lava cake to go. The total was $35.00. Kai gave the waiter a $50 bill then left.
By the time he got home, it was 11:15pm. He was exhausted. The cake got set into the fridge then he stumbled into the bathroom to wash up. Kai almost puked while brushing his teeth. He passed out on his bed shortly after.
The next morning, his hangover was gone but the sunlight pouring through the window was not appreciated. He got up to look out and saw two people walking into his apartment building.
Not to his surprise at all, Taehyun knocked on his door saying "Kai? You there?"
Kai sighed. "It's open Taehyun." What did surprise him was seeing Beomgyu with bloodshot eyes. He looked like he had been crying all night. He began to also wonder when the last time he slept was. Overall, Kai was just thankful Beomgyu was still alive.
Now that he knew the heir was alive, he feared for his own life. He looked towards the window, scared he pissed the heir off one too many times. This was it. This was how he was going to die.
Beomgyu whimpered "please don't leave. I don't know how many times I need to tell you that I won't hurt you. Ever."
The window was already halfway open.
Taehyun softly said "Kai. Let him explain. It's not what you think."
Kai shot back "how the hell did you find me so fast?"
"You didn't have a car and you didn't pay a cab to take you anywhere. It was just narrowing down walkable cities and you already lived in most of them. The apartment part was the hardest but I got lucky because I saw you in the window."
Blinds. Fucking curtains and blinds was the one thing he forgot and it screwed him over. Kai didn't speak. He was so mad at himself for forgetting that.
Beomgyu sat down on the floor. "I wasn't happy about what I was doing to that prisoner Kai. I was happy because when I saw you, I realized I didn't care about my status. I was going to tell you I wanted to live with you... that I would give up everything to be with you...that one day I want to marry you..."
Kai closed the window and sat on his bed. "Have you actually given everything up?"
"Yes... I took as much cash as I could but Soobin cut me off... Yeonjun is trying to convince him to give me access again but honestly I don't care. Losing you is worse than losing my money."
Taehyun left the apartment to wait outside the door.
Beomgyu slowly stood up and walked over. He sat down next to Kai, facing towards him. "I love you. I don't know what I'd do without you in my life. I told you I'd chase you no matter how many times you ran away. Please stop running away..."
Kai didn't speak. He was so confused. Every time his trust was built, it got shattered soon after. He felt something placed into his hand. It was a small black bracelet that had a wolf pendant with a ruby in the eye.
Beomgyu explained "this was mine. I got it when I was a baby. I've kept it since for the same reason you kept that necklace. My parents died when I was really young. I want you to have it."
"Why? Please don't give this to me. It's special to you."
"I want you to have it so you know how serious I am. I know you don't trust me but I'm asking you to... please?"
Kai handed him back the bracelet but Beomgyu took his wrist instead. He slipped it on then adjusted it until it fit perfectly. It really was beautiful. The wolf charm sat in the middle of his wrist. The ruby glittered in the sunlight.
Beomgyu saw him staring at it. "Say something perfection."
"I don't think I'll ever be able to trust you."
"I know... I promise to fix that if you let me stay."
Kai didn't speak for a few moments. He wasn't going back to that stupid city. Regret mostly filled his mind. He should've let Beomgyu explain. Running away never solved any of his problems.
The little black and red bracelet was still sitting in his dresser. He got up but Beomgyu had a grip on his wrist. The heir pleaded "please... please stay.""I actually have something to give you." Beomgyu let go. Kai dug through his drawer and grabbed what he was looking for. He presented it to his heir. "I bought this because I was worried you were going to kill yourself. I wanted something besides a weapon to remember you."
Beomgyu cried again as Kai slipped it on his wrist. "I wasn't going to kill myself... if I did, I'd never be able to see you again..."
Kai softly kissed his tears then worked his way down to Beomgyu's lips. He pulled away and whispered "I love you."
"God, I love you too Kai." Beomgyu kissed him again. He grabbed his boyfriend's hand and pulled him into bed. Beomgyu relaxed onto Kai's chest. It was the best pillow in the world. He held him tightly and started to fall asleep.
Taehyun didn't hear anything for a while so he came in. He saw Beomgyu sleeping but Kai was still awake. He whispered "if you're still up for it, I'll always welcome you back. Your apartment won't change. How long is your lease here anyway?"
Kai whispered "6 months."
"I hope to see you in 6 months then. He hasn't eaten in a while. When's the last time you ate? Are you hungry?"
Kai shook his head no but he was starving.
Taehyun assumed he was lying and said "I'll be right back with food for everyone."
Kai watched him leave. He was terrified of letting his heir back into his life but it was better than missing him all of the time. He loved him. That never changed.
All of his doubts started to fade when Beomgyu pulled him in tighter. Trust was going to be hard to rebuild but he wanted to try. It was time to stop running.
