*These events show what happened in another universe when Mo Xuanyu deleted all the 'Wei Wuxians' and isn't relevant to the main story*

Blood stained the graining, sharp rocks of the Burial Mounds. Wei Wuxian blew into his flute aggressively, the high-pitched notes, echoing amidst the chaos of war. Battle cries were sounded signifying the alliance of many clans. Wei Wuxian paid them no heed, resentful energy seeping into his consciousness, blocking out all sense, blurring the lines of reality.

He was tired. The Yilling Louzu was tired of everything. He didn't understand what he was doing. Why even bother to put up a fight if the world won't stop until he is dead? Wei Wuxian was often reminded, rather forcefully might he add, that cultivating the ghost path will damage his consciousness. He brushed those concerns and insults away, often with a forced laugh and glowing eyes, daring anyone to challenge him. Wei Wuxian might not be walking the righteous path but he was anything but a fool. He knew the costs of demonic cultivation and he was willing to risk the consequences.

Wei Wuxian was aware that his consciousness was being damaged by his cultivation. However, it's not like he has a choice in the matter. Once he decided his body was going to be a host for the resentful energy, there was no backing out. The effects will haunt him to his grave and beyond and there won't be anything he can do to stop it.

Lost in his own head, his own thoughts drowned out, he could barely understand what was happening. There were times he couldn't remember his past and the events that led up to the Burial Mounds incidents. Those times scared him immensely. He, however, never reported any of these memory blanks to Wen Qing, scared she'll do something to stop him from his cultivation.

Opening his eyes, Wei Wuxian tried to make sense of his surroundings. The world was too bright for his liking, despite it being night. The screams, cries, and metallic clink of swords started to blur in his mind, assisting the roaring storm that was brewing in his mind. He couldn't remember who he was or where he came from.

"Wei Ying!" A familiar voice called to him. Why the voice was familiar, Wei Wuxian had no clue. Turning his body, Wei Wuxian was met with a man dressed in white Gusu robes, carrying a Guqin. His body reacted before his mind could and immediately thought of him as a danger. Summoning a few corpses, Wei Wuxian sent them in the man's direction. The Gusu man strummed a few notes with his bleeding fingers, freezing the corpses where they stood, spiritual energy binding them down.

Wei Wuxian hissed in annoyance, a cloud of resentful energy spiraling toward the man in defiance. "Wei Ying!" He called out again, more desperately. The man dodged the resentful energy, unsheathing his sword. He leaped high into the air with the assistance of his spiritual core which Wei Wuxian noticed to be very strong. In a graceful swirl, he pointed the sword at Wei Wuxian, aiming for his Dizi.

Wei Wuxian roared in anger, balling up a highly condensed portion of resentful energy in his hand, sending it flying toward the man in white with unimaginable speed. Despite the Gusu man having a very strong golden core and years of cultivation training behind him, he, just like everyone else, was worn out and not in his prime. The man was caught off-guard, the resentful energy successfully putting him into a choke hold. "Wei Ying!" The man called a final time, eyes doused with pleading.

Realization crashed on Wei Wuxian like an aggressive wave against the shore. His grip on the resentful energy loosened, allowing the man to fall back onto the ground. His fingers around his flute trembled, Chengqing falling from his grasp.

"Lan Zhan?" he asked uncertainly, eyes flashing with memories he thought were lost forever.

Meeting him on the roof of Cloud Recesses.

Their time in the library together.

The archery competition.

Killing the Tortious of Slaughter.

Eating together in Yilling.

His mind finally caught up with his body. He now just realized how tired he was. His arms were hanging limply by his side and his legs were starting to give out. His eyes fluttered shut as he succumbed to the ache that was building inside his muscles.

Lan Wangji ran towards him just in time to catch his falling body. Cradling him in his arms, Lan Wangji ran as far as he could from the battlefield.

Wei Wuxian woke up a few hours later in a cave. He had no memory of how he got here. Just as his vision cleared, he saw Lan Wangji kneeling in front of him. "Lan Zhan..." Wei Wuxian whispered, his voice soft and weak. Lan Wangji immediately cradled Wei WUxian in his arms, whispering softly.

Tugging on the edges of Lan Wangji's robes, Wei Wuxian sighed. "I want to go back to Gusu with you, Lan Zhan."

The shock was evident on Lan Wangji's face, a clear contrast to his usual expressionless mask. His features smoothed to something that resembles warmth.

However, before any of them knew what was going on, a supernatural event started to occur. Wei Wuxian seemed to be fading. Panicking, Lan Wangji, went to touch Wei Wuxian but his hand went right through. "Lan Zha-" Wei Wuxian tried to say but before he knew it, he was no more. Not even a soul was left behind.

Lan Wangji kneeled on the ground, heart in agony. He could hear his uncle call out his name from outside the cave but he couldn't care less. He clutched the ground with an iron grip, a lone tear streaking down his face. "Wei Ying," he whispered, heart torn into pieces, "Where did you go?"

Meanwhile, a deity by the name of Mo Xuanyu was panicking in another realm. "MO XUANYU!" His superiors roared. "WHAT DID YOU DO TO ALL THE 'WEI WUXIANS'?"

With a flick from the superiors' hands, Mo Xuanyu was kicked to the mortal realm, unable to access the deity realm until he fixed his mistake.
