Our mate was gone. After our mother told us that she was royal and that we needed to get her so she would be under the pack’s protection, we rushed back to her apartment. Although by the time we showed up, her apartment was completely empty and she was gone.

“I’m sorry boys, she let me know she wouldn’t be renting here anymore due to losing her job. I wish I could tell you more but I don’t know anything else.” The landlord lady had been talking to Alex, who always seemed to be able to talk the smoothest when it came to humans. Her scent was faint, she must have left almost immediately after we left.

“Did she ever have a co-signer or anyone else on the lease? Any visitors that she had to pass by you?” Alex asked the woman and she thought for a second.

“Actually I have a copy of her original lease, I could give that to you if that would help. You’d have to promise to keep this between us.” She said, giving a look at Alex and he nodded following the lady to her office. Why the hell did she run, did she feel unsafe after what Tisha did? No that didn’t make sense, she easily overpowered Tisha. So why did she run.

“Hey, Mason, don’t worry, we’re going to find her. We’ll fix this.” Jayden said trying to comfort me. I sighed and we waited as Alex finished talking to the landlord. He sauntered out of the office and gave a huge grin.

“Dude, what the fuck are you smiling about?” I growled at him, while all he did was give me a cocky look.

“We’ve gotta get back to the pack. We have a lead but we’re going to need a little help.” Alex said, walking towards our car. Jayden and I rushed to follow him to the car. I was hoping he would fill us in before we made it all the way back to our pack. Alex had a tendency to rush into things and not inform us until it was too late. Jayden looked at Alex after I started driving, and just stared at him for a minute.

“Are you going to tell us, or are we supposed to just sit in anticipation?” He asked him sarcastically, and I had to silence my laughter. Alex glared at him for a second before unfolding a piece of paper.

“Well when our mate originally got her lease here she had to have someone to cosign. It says here that a woman named Lydia Darkshine cosigned for her.” He said gleefully waving the paper around. I groaned and Jayden shot me a look. I knew better than to voice my concern on how little the clues he found were. I loved my brother but he really jumped to conclusions sometimes.

“Did it list a relationship?” Jayden asked gently, trying to ease more information from our brother. Jayden was always better at the patience stuff then I was. I wanted nothing more than to take the sheet of paper he was holding and read it for myself.

“Yea, uh, one second.” He paused and checked through the document. “Yeah uh, she’s her aunt.” He said quickly. I realized who we would have to talk to. I was really not looking forward to it.

“Fuck, Mason, does that mean, that we have to visit Octavia?” Jayden asked, and I nodded briefly. Octavia had been our friend when we were little but after a while we had grown apart especially after she was sent away to train. When Octavia got her fox counterpart, and shifted for the first time, she was gifted with a rare form of magic. Octavia was an Oracle. She had gone away for a while to train and accept her gift, although by accepting it, she immediately made herself unaware to any mate bond she could’ve had.

Oracles had mates, and could eventually have families, but not while they had the gift of sight. Once an Oracle gave up their gift of sight, they opened the door for their mate bond and would be able to find them. Although any mate of an Oracle could still find them, they would be able to tell them about the mate bond, but it was almost always rejected. So far only Fox shifters had been gifted with Oracles, while Wolf shifters had Healers and Bird shifters had witches that were in tune with the elements.

Octavia hadn’t done anything bad to us, had just wanted to be our friend but I said some really stupid stuff before she left to accept her gift. So going to her now, especially for a favor when I hadn’t been able to talk to her since she got back, I was not looking forward to it.

“Oh yay, I can’t wait to see her! Honestly, if she hadn’t been gifted with being an Oracle, I was kinda hoping she would be our mate. I mean, fuck, she was pretty when we were teenagers, I wonder how she looks now.” Alex practically drooled, and I shot him a look.

“Alex, we have a fucking mate, you really shouldn’t be drooling over someone else.” I snapped, I felt bad when he finally realized and looked like he was beating himself up about it. We were all new to this mate bond and I knew he wouldn’t do anything with anyone else, but I couldn’t have him saying stupid stuff like that in front of our mate by accident.

The rest of the ride to our pack was done in silence. I hated not being able to find something to talk about. As we finally passed into our pack lands a sudden pain hit me in the chest. It felt like a silver blade was being stabbed into my heart multiple times, I heard Jayden crying out and Alex screaming. I lost control of the car as I tried to control my breathing, and it skidded off the road, crashing into a tree. The pain stopped as quickly as it came, like it was never there.

“Hey!” I could hear voices coming but the ringing in my ears from the crash made them seem really far away. I knew we would heal quickly, thanks to our wolves and Alex’s fox.

“Hey, I need some help, it’s the future Alphas!” The voices got closer and just before I blacked out I saw Evelyn out of the corner of my eye.
