Training filled my days recently. I could hear the girls of the pack talking behind me about things I would only dream of doing to my mate. I was starting to get frustrated, everyone was finding their mates and I was stuck not knowing. I didn’t even know if my mate was still alive.

Mate is out there, I feel it. Oberon, my dragon, hummed at me. Rolling my eyes, I continued to the pack hospital. I had heard that my future luna was there attending to the boy the alphas brought back. A heartbroken howl, echoed over the quiet area, my heart breaking with the sound. I rushed around the hospital into the back gardens. Before I skidded to a stop.

Kenzie, or rather her kitsune and the boy’s kitsune were surrounded in a golden light. I could feel his power flowing into her. It was an ancient magic, and not one that almost any kitsune was granted. I had heard my ancestors talk about their ancestors knowing of one kitsune who had this power. That man had let it go to his head and was challenged by his son for the crown as soon as the son became of age. It was a grizzly story.

The light dimmed and the boy’s kitsune slumped to the ground, Kenzie’s kitsune let out a howl full of pain. She must have felt the pack tether snap. I watched as she curled her body around his. I knew of their customs, the boy would be buried in his animal form, it’s why they always try to shift before death consumes them. If they are unable to shift, they are cremated. Cautiously, I approached the pair, getting on my knees while at a respectful distance away.

“Kenzie, I can help you take him somewhere to be buried.” I spoke softly, her kitsune staring at me. I let Oberon come forward and he spoke to her.

“Hello Princess, I am sorry for the loss, please let us help.” He was talking as softly as he could, yet his voice still boomed across the gardens. I knew it would alert the future alphas, my friends, but I didn’t care at the moment.

I watched as her kitsune stood and then promptly looked away when I heard her start to shift back. I took off my jacket and held it out to her. It would be big enough to cover everything. We weren’t bashful about nudity around here but my friends haven’t even had the chance to mark her as theirs. I wasn’t about to start a fight between us.

“Hey, uh, thank you for the offer to help, but I don’t even think you could lift him.” I chuckled at her words and walked past her. Brushing my hand against the kitsune’s fur, I sent a prayer that this poor boy was with the Goddess, where he would no longer feel pain. I didn’t let my eyes wander to the horrible bloody stumps where two of his tails used to be. I lifted him up into my arms, glancing over at Kenzie to see the confusion in her eyes. I realized even though I had been the one to hide her away from my alphas parents, I hadn’t actually disclosed that I was a dragon shifter. Isabella had followed us shortly afterwards and then had started rambling on about things that really only girls understood.

“I can most definitely lift him, as you can see. I’m not a wolf or fox shifter, Kenzie. Oberon is a dragon.” I started walking and I glanced over at her to see her eyes lighting up with excitement.

“You’re a dragon shifter? I’m so honored to meet you. I had heard tales and learned about them in my studies but I’ve never met one in real life. I heard that dragon shifters are like kitsune shifters. Is that true? Do you process magic?” She was gasping for air as she peppered me with questions and tried to keep up with my pace.

“Kenzie, I believe we’ll have a better time in the future for this conversation. Besides, we’re here.” I had brought her to my favorite spot in the pack. We stood in the grass clearing in the forest. It was fairly deep in the forest so not many came this way. There was a lake at the other edge of the clearing. Kenzie’s excitement died and she looked ashamed of herself.

Setting down the boy, I let Kenzie seek out a spot for him. When she found one, she shifted and started digging a hole big enough for the poor boy. I watched over him, occasionally brushing my hand along his fur and whispering prayers to the Moon Goddess.

“It’s ready.” I looked up and immediately looked away. Kenzie stood at the edge of the hole she dug nude, not bothering to put clothing on again. I lifted the boy and settled him into the grave she dug. She again shifted and covered his body with dirt. I got a really good look at her kitsune, the fiery orange fur, her white paws and her nine tails. I’ve been to a kitsune court before but I only ever saw the royals in their human form. The crescent moon on her forehead was special.

She turned to me and I found myself staring directly into scarlet and gold eyes. This was her kitsune. She bowed her head to me, and I dipped low into a bow. Turning back to the grave, she dug her paws into the earth and all around us bluebells started blooming. I watched in awe at this amazing power.

Where are you? Have you seen Kenzie? I can’t find her anywhere. Mason mindlinked me. I was still staring at the now flower filled area with awe as I told him where we were.

Her grief filled howls filled the air once more, our pack wolves responding to it, their howls full of sorrow for their future luna.
