The train ride was typical, although seeing my little sister was pure bliss when I showed up at the last stop. She was bouncing when she saw the train pulling up. I pretended to look all around like I couldn’t see her. I spotted my aunt and gave her a quick wink, before calling out to her.
“Hey Aunt Lydia, did Tori not want to come see me?” I asked, putting my hand on over my heart, faking being hurt. Tori started to glare at me, her hands on her hips.
“I know you can see me Kenzie. This is just mean, I’m right here!” She said, jumping up to try and be right in front of my eyes. I stifled my laughter before I burst.
“Well, Kenzie, you know how preteens can get, wanting to be independent, and all that nonsense. I guess we’ll just have to see her at home.” Lydia joked back, Tori looking at her in shock. She looked at her hands and then back at us, before we just started to die laughing. I picked up my little sister and twirled her around before handing her my puppy’s crate.
“A dog! Oh my Goddess, I’ve always wanted a dog. Aunty Lydia, can we keep him?” She immediately started begging, and I laughed. Lydia pretended to contemplate and then just nodded.
We had gone back to their home after that and the last couple days had gone by in a rush. I spent a lot of time with my little sister, helping her with her studies and just letting her talk to me. She always seemed to be able to come up with something to talk about.
It was my third night here, Tori had fallen asleep in my lap as we watched a movie and I set her in bed, covering her up. I kissed her forehead and closed her door quietly.
“So, now that the little monster isn’t glued to your hip, would you like to talk about it?” My aunt Lydia was standing in the kitchen doorway, with two cups of hot cider in her hands. Her eyes held a deep sadness that I hated to see. I remembered when everyone in our family was so happy, but now there was hardly anyone left.
“Sure. Let’s talk.”
I spent the next hour telling her everything about my mates, and everything that had happened that day. She was grinning ear to ear when she heard I had found my mates. I rolled my eyes at her suggestive looks.
“We didn’t do anything, just so you know.” I said, her laughter filling the room with joy. She was always my favorite person after my parents.
“No, but you did shift in front of them.” She said, and then got quiet. I noticed her eyes darting around the house. She looked back at me. “What was the name of the pack?”
I gave her a weird look and thought to myself. I had heard it in passing. “Blood moon, I think. Why?” She smiled quickly before moving to the window and peeking through her curtains. I hated the fact that we couldn’t relax in our own home. The sun had barely started to set, we shouldn’t be worrying so much.
“Blood moon offered us safe haven when the attacks happened, but we were unable to make it there. After your parents were killed, I didn’t want to risk taking you girls to any pack once you found me. Especially after you told me what happened at the last one who offered you safe haven. But if you found your mates there, they will protect you. Victoria and you will be safe there.” She said, again looking out the window. She was frantic at this point.
“What is going on Lydia?” I asked, trying to look around her, “Is someone out there?” She pushed me back. I gave her a look and she smiled softly. She looked so much like my mom, it honestly made me sad. Her and my mom were three years apart in age but Lydia always looked like a mini me for my mom. She had the same strawberry blond hair, the same amber eyes, and the same smile. But after my parents death, her age started to really show. The wrinkles on her forehead from all the stress, the gray in her hair and the tired look that always seemed to be in her eyes. I missed the happy carefree aunt I had grown up with. She used to be able to pretend to be a bad influence, but now she was stuck helping raise her niece, although she never once complained.
