Narrators POV;
-------- March 31st, 1991.
4pm

THE RAIN DRIPPED OVER VALERIE as she stared at her bestfriends gravestone.

This was her second loss of a friend, but this time, it was her best friend from middle school, overdosing on heroin.

She didn't know what to think anymore, San Diego wasn't the place for her anymore. She's tried to lose people.

She heard the sobbs of her bestfriends parents, her little brother, cousins.

She wanted out.

She needed to start new, no more constant needles around her roommates floor, no more flour on the table.

She needed out.

The minute the funeral was over, she called the only person she knew to.

Eddie, her brother.

Eddie vedder, the new pearl jam singer, was her only by a year, older brother.

Quite literally a year, because she was born the same day as Eddie, but a year younger.

She looked like him too, dark brown hair that had the 'surfer curl' to it, blue eyes and personality.

They could've been twins.

Hell. She's even his height, maybe shorter by a few.

She only knew to call him. He moved months prior to Seattle. She was alone in San Diego, and she hated it.

Both roommates were dead. She was alone in her drug filled house.

She hated drugs.

She waited and waited for him to answer, but finally, just when she was about to hang up- he answered.

"Hello?"

She was pleased to hear him on the other side of the phone, a relief fell over her.

"It's Valerie," the girl sighed into the phone.

"You don't sound too good," Eddie chuckled over the phone.

"I just got back from Eliza's funeral, ed, of course not."

Eddie stiffened. He forgot about that.

"Shit, sorry."

"I want out, eddie," Valerie pleaded, "I want to go with you."

"What?"

This was sudden. He was shocked.

"I'm tired of dealing with all these drugs in my own house. It killed two of my best friends and my roommate, ed! I just want to start over."

Eddie understood where she was coming from. He hummed into the phone, "I have a room, Beth doesn't live here, so I think you're okay."

"You think?"

"Here, ask her!" Eddie huffed, passing the phone to Beth.

"Hello, Valerie?"

"Hey Beth," she smiled.

"Hey! Are you coming to Seattle?" She asked, beeming with excitement.

"I want to," Valerie lightly smiled, "but Ed wants me to live with him."

"That would be great!" Beth smiled.

A relief washed over Valerie, "I needed to hear from you that I could, thank you."

Beth laughed, "Heres Eddie val."

"See, I fucking told you!"

"Shut up Edward," Valerie hissed.

"Will you come?" Eddie asked, "please."

"I will. The landlord had the place sold, I need to be out by.." Valerie looked at her calendar, "2nd."

"Two days!" Eddie spat, "you should've called sooner!"

"I know, I know, I'm sorry!"

"Plane or driving?"

"I'll start packing because no way in hell I'm going on a plane."

Eddie laughed, "You know my address. I'll see you in less than 3 days."

The line went dead, and all Valerie had to do now was pack her stuff.
....

She had boxes on top of boxes by 10 pm. at night, the house was empty, and she was alone.

She missed her best friends, her roommates.

She couldn't fall asleep, the reminder of her bestfriends lifeless body remand in her memory.

•••• FLASHBACK

Valerie walked into the rotten, smoked out house, excited to tell Eliza she found a 2 person place.

Their previous roommate had died to an overdose, so it felt empty.

They planned to move into a nicer apartment, Eliza, and Valerie.

She walked into Elizas' room, only to find she's not there.

She walked into her bathroom but saw the worst scene possible.

Her best friend, purple and white, foaming by the mouth, dead.

She stopped in shock, she looked at the needle from her arm, then to the pills on the ground.

"Overdose," she whispered.

"Eliza," she whispered, "eliza!" She shouted, shaking Eliza, "Wake up! Comon, wake up!"

"eliza!" She yelped, tears swelling her eyes.

"Stay, please!"

She got up to phone the police, pouring tears from her face.

"911, what's your emergency?"

"My best friend, Eliza, she's-" Valerie got cut off by a sob.

"Sorry, what?"

"My best friend is dead."

When she saw them cover her lifeless body, she sobbed, nobody could comfort her like when it happened the first time, now she's alone.

Her best friend swore she stopped, and she cried to Valerie about it. So why was she dead?

The minute elizas parents got there, they all sobbed together, her mom was pale and pained.

"I'm so sorry," Valerie pleaded, holding elizas 16 year old brother in a hug.

She sobbed for hours till everything was quiet, and then she called Eddie.

"Helloo!"

"Eddie," she quietly cried.

"Whoa, whoa, what's wrong val?"

"Eliza," she cried, "she's died!"

Valerie had gone numb. She was done with San Diego. With everything, she needed a new start.

Seattle, it was.
