"Can you believe her, Logan?" I complained, dropping onto the couch with my wine glass in hand. "She's literally sending me away. I think Odessa finally got tired of me and decided to replace me with someone less annoying."
Logan barely looked up from where he was sitting. "Or," he said calmly, "she has her reasons."
I narrowed my eyes. "Whose side are you on?"
"No one's."
"That sounded very supportive of her."
A quiet laugh escaped him before he stood and walked behind my chair. His hands settled on my shoulders, slowly massaging the tension out of them.
I hated how quickly my body relaxed.
"You're stressed," he muttered.
"I'm annoyed."
"Same thing."
I leaned back slightly, staring at the ceiling. "She could've sent anyone else."
"She trusts you the most."
That answer only made me more irritated.
After a moment, Logan spoke again. "When are you leaving?"
"Tonight."
His hands paused for a second.
"It's not a simple mission, CC," he said more seriously now. "Matthew Dashwood used to lead Shadow. Even retired, he won't let his guard down completely."
I knew that already.
Matthew Dashwood wasn't just some mafia leader. He was one of the most feared men in the underground world long before he disappeared from public operations. People still talked about him like a ghost story.
And unfortunately for me, he was also my father.
"That's why I'm not targeting him," I replied quietly. "I'm going for Mabel."
Logan went silent for a moment.
My twin sister.
Even thinking the words felt strange.
Odessa wanted a DNA sample from the Dashwoods, but I still didn't fully understand why. She clearly suspected something.
Or maybe she already knew something and was waiting for proof.
"Mabel's the easier option," Logan finally admitted.
Easier.
I almost laughed at that.
The Dashwoods guarded Mabel like she was made of glass. Everyone in the mafia world knew it. She had four older brothers, all dangerously protective, and a father who would probably burn cities down for her.
No one even dared flirt with her publicly.
There were rumors that one of her brothers once hospitalized a man just for following her too long at an event.
It made me sick sometimes.
All that love. All that protection.
For one daughter.
While the other one had been abandoned without a second thought.
I tightened my grip around the wine glass.
I told myself years ago that I didn't care anymore.
But somewhere deep down, I still wanted answers.
