We were all standing together, trying to act normal.
Trying.
But honestly? None of us were normal right now.
We were waiting for her.
Our sister.
The thought alone made my chest feel weird in a way I couldn't explain.
"Greetings to the Dashwood family," Aunt Odessa said as she approached us.
Mom and Dad both immediately turned to her.
That look on their faces wasn't new.
But tonight, it felt sharper.
Odessa only laughed lightly. "That glare is familiar... but I think hers is scarier than all of yours combined. Still, you'll manage."
"Where is she?" Mom asked immediately.
No hesitation.
No patience left.
Odessa didn't even answer at first. She just looked around the hall casually, like she wasn't about to change everything for us.
Then she pointed.
"There."
Our heads snapped instantly.
And I saw her.
My twin.
For a second, everything else disappeared.
The crowd, the noise, the music—gone.
Just her.
Standing there with an expression that looked... annoyed.
Real annoyed.
Like she already regretted being here.
She looked... beautiful.
Not in a way that needed attention.
In a way that naturally pulled it anyway.
"She's angry because I made her come without warning," Odessa said with a small laugh. "She prefers control."
Mom didn't look away. "That's her?"
Odessa nodded.
"And before you ask," she added, "she's not weak. Not even close."
Dad stayed silent.
But I saw it.
The way his hand tightened slightly.
Odessa continued, almost casually. "Her ability? Strong. Her mind? Sharp. But her emotions..."
She paused.
"...That's where things get complicated."
I listened carefully.
For the first time in my life, I was hearing about someone who was supposed to be me—but wasn't.
"She doesn't cry easily," Odessa said. "Not in front of people. Sometimes not even alone."
That part made something in my chest tighten.
Why would someone not be able to cry?
"She shuts it in," Odessa continued. "If you see her break... don't ignore it. That's not weakness. That's everything she's been holding back finally slipping."
I didn't realize I was staring at her until I blinked.
My twin was still there.
Still standing like she didn't belong to anyone in this room.
But she did.
Somehow.
Odessa's voice lowered slightly. "And if she ever disappears from a conversation, or goes quiet... don't push her too hard. Just... stay close."
I frowned slightly. "Why?"
Odessa looked at me.
"Because she doesn't know how to ask for help."
That line stuck.
Before I could think more, a man approached her.
He smiled at her.
Polite.
Too polite.
I watched as he leaned in slightly, too familiar, too close—
And kissed her hair.
My entire body went still.
I wasn't the only one.
Hunter moved instantly beside me.
Nolan's hand clenched so hard his knuckles turned white.
Dad's expression darkened.
But she didn't react the way I expected.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Just... uncomfortable.
Her posture shifted slightly.
Like she was calculating distance without making a scene.
Then suddenly—
Logan appeared.
Fast.
Between them in seconds.
He said something low, controlled.
The man left just as quickly, smiling like nothing happened.
Disgusting.
My stomach turned.
Then Logan turned slightly—
And for a second, his eyes scanned the room.
Sharp.
Protective.
Like he was making sure no one else was watching her the wrong way.
That's when I understood something.
He wasn't just around her.
He was guarding her.
Odessa noticed my expression and sighed. "That's typical Logan. Overprotective to a fault."
She tilted her head. "He's worse when she dresses up. He doesn't like attention on her."
I watched as Logan spoke to her again.
Her reaction changed instantly.
She looked annoyed.
Then confused.
Then like she was trying very hard not to care.
But she did.
Because even from here, I could see it.
She didn't want to move.
But she followed him anyway.
Not fully willingly.
Not fully resisting either.
Like someone dragging a storm cloud through a room that didn't know what to do with it.
And then—
She turned her head.
For half a second.
And looked directly at us.
My breath caught.
Because it wasn't curiosity.
It wasn't fear.
It was recognition.
Or something dangerously close to it.
Then Logan pulled her forward again, guiding her toward us.
Closer.
And closer.
Until there was no pretending anymore.
Until the space between "stranger" and "sister" finally collapsed.
