"We need to buy a new wardrobe for CC," Hunter said, sitting across from me like he was announcing a national emergency.

"Why?" Matthew asked, already sounding tired.

Hunter didn't even hesitate. "Because you all should see her closet. It's full of revealing outfits."

I slowly turned my head toward him.

God.

I really wanted to throw the butter knife at him.

Elijah sighed, but he was smiling slightly. "Yeah... Odessa mentioned something like that."

Of course she did.

"So," Matthew said, "shopping after breakfast?"

"No," I said immediately. Then corrected myself. "I mean—my clothes are fine."

"They're not an exception, CC," Nolan said casually, offering me toast like this was a normal conversation.

I took it anyway.

Because refusing would start another lecture.

So now I had five people judging my wardrobe choices instead of one.

Great improvement.

Mabel leaned forward. "Wait—if CC is staying here, we should tell her the rules."

I froze slightly.

Rules.

I already hated that word.

Carmen cleared his throat like he was about to give a speech.

"Rule one: never leave the house alone."

"Rule two: don't stay out too long."

"Rule three: don't talk back."

"Rule four: don't cuss."

"Rule five: no boys."

"Rule six: always respond when spoken to."

Silence.

I stared at them.

Slowly.

Each rule sounded worse than the last.

They were serious.

That was the problem.

"Do you understand?" Carmen asked firmly.

"Yes," I said immediately.

Too quickly.

Because I definitely understood.

I understood I was not following any of that.

At all.

"If any rule is broken," Matthew added, "there will be consequences."

My brow lifted slightly. "Consequences?"

Carmen nodded like this was normal. "Apology letters. At least twenty pages. Explaining what you did."

I blinked.

"...Twenty pages?"

Mabel sighed beside me. "It's worse than it sounds."

That was not comforting.

That was a warning.

I leaned back slightly in my chair, exhaling through my nose.

"Right," I muttered.

So basically—

I had been adopted into a family.

A very loud.

Very strict.

Very overprotective family.

Perfect.

We finished breakfast eventually, though I barely remembered eating.

Afterward, Nolan started asking me questions in the living room—random things, half curiosity, half interrogation.

I was answering on autopilot when—

Ding-dong.

The doorbell rang.

"I'll get it!" Blake called immediately, already standing up.

She disappeared toward the entrance.

For a moment, the room went quiet again.

Then Mabel leaned closer to me slightly.

"...Do you think it's Grandpa?" she whispered.

I blinked. "I don't know who your Grandpa is yet."

She nodded seriously. "Fair."

I leaned back on the couch, glancing toward the door.

Something about the house felt like it shifted slightly.

Like whatever walked in next—

was going to make the "rules" conversation look small.
