—With Dream—
"This is... not good."
"Why not?"
Dream sat beside Core, golden eyes inquisitive as Core peered into who knows exactly where.
"They're not relenting." Core said with a shake of their head. "Nightmare's not with them either, I think they might be planning something."
"Unlikely." Dream combatted, him too shaking his head. "I know my brother. He probably won't feel the need to retaliate at a single message. In fact, he's probably just keeping a close eye on that—"
A gasp cut Dream off from his monologue. Blinking, he looked to Core, who hand their hand pressed firmly against their mouth. Black eyes locked with twinkling gold. Dream tilted his head.
"What?"
"They've got Reaper with them."
Dream too lifted a hand to his teeth as a gasp escaped him. Reaper? As in Geno's mate? As in the god of death? "Truly?" He asked, breathless. If they had him on their side then...
"I haven't seen him do much of anything." Core quickly reassured, one of their small gray hands settling itself on Dream's shoulder. "He looks like he's just been floating about, really."
"What a relief." Dream sighed, shoulders relaxing as he rested his eyes for a moment. "That's... something to look into later. I'll get Geno on it, but for now why don't we figure out how to execute our plan B."
Core nodded, black eyes dimming for a moment. "If you're sure Nightmare is at his castle, looking after the hostage, we should take them while they're in his care." They suggested, bringing a hand to their chin.
Dream took a steadying breath. Right. Simple. Slip in, take the human, slip out. Easy as butt pie. Bony brows scrunched together in thought. He would have to time it extremely right.
For a moment, Core hesitated, seeing Dream's expression. A question sat on the very tip of their tongue. It took a bit of careful consideration... but they ultimately voiced their concerns.
"Are you sure you'll be able to take your brother?" It sounded better in their head.
The way Dream speared them with an incredulous gaze. Gold eyes were practically screaming with arrogance, but beneath them was a hint of hurt. His gaze immediately dropped to his lap, where he exhaled a sigh that sounded all too sad.
"I've done it before..." He started, looking at his gloved hands. Hands destined to do in one as close as a sibling. "Of course... it's been some time since we went toe to toe, but I'll be quick." He looked back up to Core. "If things go as planned, we won't have to fight each other. I'll just take the human and get back as soon as possible." Gold gleamed with finality.
"Ok..." Core said, nodding. So this was it. "We should have a few people in whatever universe the rest of the crew is raiding. That way we can keep them busy."
Dream rolled the idea around in his mind, contemplating. Who would they send anyway? Stretch, Geno perhaps, Epic... He wouldn't want his troops to be outnumbered... and anyone too weak wouldn't stand a chance against Nightmare's elite killing machines.
Dream sighed. Hard to think any of them could love when they were all pretty much just as heartless as Nightmare... and not because they were skeletons.
"Are we sure that's very smart?" Dream queried, too many little worries gnawing viciously at him. "What if we fail? What if instead of holding them up, it has the opposite effect?" He shouldn't be asking, but it's a pressing matter and needs to be addressed.
"Highly doubt that." Core easily shot down the possibility. "They're not the type to stop. I can assure you that they'll probably be too distracted by fighting to check up on Nightmare."
"He'll be all yours. You can take it."
Dream nodded, swallowing down the unsure lump in his throat. So be it. His brother was asking for it anyways. "Well, I suppose I should get onto scheduling this. Hopefully not too—"
Core held up a hand, a small, determined smile on their face. "No need. I'll take care of it." Hopping out of the plush chair they sat in, they took Dream by the hand and led him down to the cafeteria. Blue and Ink were waiting. "I believe you deserve a break. I haven't seen you sleep in a while."
Dream chuckled, ruffling their hair as Blue and Ink rushed over. "Thank you, Core. I suppose I'll heed your advice... and leave you alone for a little." He managed to say at least that before he was bombarded by a barrage of questions.
As things settled down, with Core back in their office to find the perfect scheme, and Blue and Ink satisfied with their questions being answered, nagging suspicions ate away at the back of Dream's mind.
Wonders of how and why Reaper of all people had landed in Nightmare's little gang of killers. An affair, perhaps? A deal? A bet? Something, anything that wasn't free will. That kind of involvement could throw the whole... the whole battle. Results would be so horribly skewed that... that things would surely cease to exist.
A slap landed on Dream's back rather hard. He stumbled where he stood in the hallway. Looking over his shoulder, he saw Fresh. One of the ones he had to unfortunately deal with after Horror's escape.
"Hey Broski what's hot?" He slung and arm around Dream, pulling him along down the hallway. "Saw you thinkin' real hard just now. What's with that huh?"
"Nothing for you to worry about." Dream supplied, kindly slipping out of Fresh's embrace and clasping his hands. He wouldn't lie. "Just... pressing matters."
"I see you on that one, my guy." Fresh hummed, rocking on his heels. "More war plan stuff? I was on my way to Core's about those actually."
So Fresh would be going.
"In essence, yes." Dream said. "Just going over a few things mentally."
"Alright then, sounds legit." Fresh replied with a shrug. He was already walking away, towards Core's office. "See you round' Broski! Good luck!"
"Thanks!" Dream called after him, waving. Where he was going, he'd need all the luck he could get.
