Part four

"Lance-" someone says in my ear; I roll away from them and groan. "Lance it's time for breakfast." He whispers and I finally open my eyes. Keith offers me a plate of potatoes and a mug of tea, "you've been working hard on your magic?" He offers and looks at my arms. The dark blue has reached my elbows and it's up to my ankles as well. "Yeah- I told you last night-" Keith immediately turns red, "I think I may have been preoccupied." He stated and looks to the blanket covering my legs.

"Thank you Keith- for breakfast. Do you have anything for the day?" I ask him and he nods, "going to help some of the villagers put up some more houses. I cannot let Mateo take all of the glory now can I? After we start I have to also check on the Blade." He huffs as he starts to put on some of his armor. The once shiny, never worn armor is now dull and scarred.

I shake my head and shovel the food into my mouth, it feels like I haven't eaten in many moons. He mumbles a goodbye, likely already late to start the home. The world blurs around me as I finish the breakfast, the visions have been trying to consume me lately.

"Focus commander- you have to keep guard." I say to myself and stand. I decorated this home, along with the king. It sat empty for longer than I wanted, it's good that he likes it.

I pull my cloak on and exit the abode. The clouds cover the new sun as the day begins, making my ears ring. "Lance- are you okay?" Nosirrah asks as they pass through in the walkway. I mumble a 'yes' and continue to the wall, every day there's a new opening to make way for more land. Every creature comes to help expand, and to help me guard.

Most of them stay away from me though, I don't think I can blame them either. My ghastly appearance only becomes worse every day. The blue hue reaching my elbows and the dark around my eyes cannot seem friendly. I get to the new mark and start using my magic to break down the wooden wall, it's become an extension of myself.

It moves as I do, makes me able to take ten raiders. I can protect Mateo, and the prince, and the kingdom. My magic pushes me to the top of the intact wall and I can scan the area. By now what villagers volunteered to work today have arrived.

"Commander Lance, is everything clear out there?" I hear Allura ask from below. I tear my eyes from the trees and to her, her long white braid falls over her shoulder and she holds her bow. "It is clear right now my lady, are you hear to join us?"

She shakes her head, "King Shiro would like an audience with you. I'm here to take your place for a while."

"I- it's open we can't-" I try to say but she just steps outside the wall. Allura joins the rest of the guards and keeps herself to the woods. I shake myself to wake up my aching limbs and climb down. Why must the king need me this early in the morning?

Has something happened? Have I done something wrong?

I mutter to myself all the way down the path to his home. I see many new guards lined out in front, they must have Hunk and Pidge for this as well. "Commander they're waiting inside for you." One of them states but I just push through them, everything is becoming me hazy. "With the news of their newest settlement- it's easy for them to just- slip in." I couldn't help but overhear as I turn the corner. King Shiro is huddled over a dimly lit map, pointing not far from our new home.

"Why would it be easy for something to slip in?" I ask from the door and even Hunk looks startled. "Galra have started a new settlement just a few clicks from our wood line commander." Shiro's eyes are filled with uncertainty when they meet mine. "We don't have to keep expanding the closest wall. Reinforce and then expand the other way." Pidge suggests and Keith gives a loud huff. "What do you expect? Plow our flourishing farms and restart? We need enough food for the cold, it's a risk we cannot face." He stands and faces the man who raised him, "bring the walls around the farms. Break our horrible tradition of trying to earn safety, anyone should have a safe place. Including the newlings, and our farmers. We encase then when we're safe we expand."
