━━ 🏐 🏐 🏐 ━━"What do you think of tadpoles?"
I asked the boy sitting beside me. We both kept our legs curled, hugging them against our chest as we occasionally took peeks into our reflections. The pond was so vast, tucked away behind a few bushes-- not too far from our school.
"Tadpoles? What do I think of them?" He chimes, not even glancing my way. We were both too enchanted by the marine life living amongst the calm waters. There was so much to look at. The koi, the toads, even the spiders trilling over the glass-like water was beautiful.
"Mhm!" I replied with, giving him a moment to think about it. The grey-haired male eventually nods, sticking his hand into the other life beneath us. We watch as the fishes and the frog larvae swim away.
"I think they are tiny." My classmate finally speaks. I let out a warm chuckle at his response, thinking that "tiny" was a very obvious thing to say.
We continue to watch as they circle back, and the boy keeps his hand still. His fingers must be intruding on their home. "I think they are a little pointless as they are now, since they are so small." He adds on, craning his head to the side.
I didn't really understand what he meant, but it made me frown. I eventually turn my head, looking at the male in his eyes-- they never connect with mine.
"But that's how it is. Y'know, tadpoles are basically baby frogs. So, there is a page in a baby frog's life when they are small. And when you think about it, we all are tiny in the very beginning-- including animals and fishes." I speak, and by the time I'm finished, I realize that he is looking back at me.
I wear the slightest pink in my cheeks at the way he stares, but I don't look away. Instead, I smile, and we find each other smiling back at one another.
"Yeah, I guess you're right." He chortles, and I find myself feeling a little better. I know he's recently lost his father, so it's why he's a little edgy-- but... I actually find him to be really nice company.
"Anyway, do you like beetles?" The boy adds. All of a sudden; he's wearing this mischievous grin, reeling his hand from out of the glossy, green water.
"Uhm-- no! Actually! I don't like beetles at all! Is that why you stuck your hand in there?" I scrunch up my nose, watching as he turns to me, letting out this exaggerated-- suggestive chuckle. And in his fingers, he was pinching a water beetle.
"But he likes you! See?" He then tosses it into my direction, onto my lap. And as if he knew how I'd react, the boy had already been jumping back, covering his ears and grinning.
I freaked, flailing my arms as I wriggled. "Sugawara!!! Why would you do this?!" I shriek out, thrashing-- but the beetle was witty. It clung to my skirt trying not to fall off my lap.
"Ahahaha! Look at that! I told you he likes you!"
"Stop! It's not funny; pleaaaaaseeee, get it off!!"
