Eight - Taylor
Taylor had been staying with her family for the past week and honestly couldn't wait to go home to New York. She loved her family dearly but she was exhausted, having little time to rest between what Andrea would call family bonding time. Since Thanksgiving the four of them had played every board game they owned at least twice.
Taylor had managed to escape a few times under the guise of playing the wii with her brother. The wii was a staple in the Swift house and the first player remote came with a status of power and superiority.
The siblings had a deal worked out for when they spend extended periods of time at their parents house. They would rock paper scissors for the temporary privilege of being first player. Then they would have a Mario Kart tournament consisting of three rounds. They would agree on the courses beforehand and race their hearts out to the upbeat Mario theme music. After all the rounds were complete, the winner would have exclusive rights to the sacred controller for the remainder of the day.
This particular day Austin had won the Mario Kart tournament and was laying on the couch with the remote in hand while Taylor was digging through a box of games to find the one she wanted. She found the wii sports box, popped the disk into the console and took a seat on the edge of the L-shaped couch.
She tied her hair back to prepare for unassuming war in the form of wii bowling.
An hour and a half later Austin had fallen asleep on the couch and Taylor started moving up towards her room, humming a tune to herself on the way there. She had a song idea in her head, the first time she had even thought about writing new music since she started hiding away from all the public scrutiny.
She sat down on the corner of her bed and pulled out one of her old guitars that she kept at her parents house. She started strumming a c chord and continued humming the lyrics that had been circling her head.
"You should take it as a compliment that I got drunk and made fun of the way you talk. You should take it as a compliment..." She shook her head and continued playing the chord, closing her eyes to search for a different lyric. "You should think about the consequence of your magnetic field being a little too strong."
When she opened her eyes again her mom was standing in the doorway. "That was gorgeous Taylor. Are you writing new music?"
"Not really, I just had that melody stuck in my head today. I don't think anyone wants me to put new music out, especially not right now."
"Honey, you don't have to stop doing what you love because of people's capricious thoughts."
"I know mom, I just don't think now's the right time to put anything out. I have a few concepts that might become songs but I don't have enough for an album or anything. Maybe by the time I write some songs people will hate me a little less."
"Or you could just put it out now and let it be a big fuck you to everyone."
"Only if I can make a picture of this the album cover." Taylor stuck up both middle fingers and smiled her sweetest smile.
Andrea laughed and shook her head. "You are an adult and you make your own adult decisions, if that's really what you want to make your album cover then I suppose that's your prerogative. I don't think the mothers of some of your younger fans would be too pleased."
"Mom, I was joking."
"Oh thank goodness because I think that's a horrible idea." Her mother put her hand across her chest and let out an over dramatic sigh of relief. "I am serious honey, if you want to write songs you should. Don't let other people stop you from doing that."
"I won't, I just need time." Andrea bent down to hug her daughter before leaving Taylor alone in the room.
Once Taylor was alone she went back to strumming on her guitar, mumbling incoherent words. She pulled out her phone to record a voice memo of what she had come up with earlier. Thinking about what her mother had said she titled it 'gorgeous.'
Taylor was still uncertain of writing new music. The public and media hadn't exactly been kind to her recently and putting out new music could do one of two things. The public could take it well and forgive her for all of her perceived wrongdoings.
Or it could make everyone hate her even more.
She didn't know and at the moment it didn't matter. She knew that releasing new music now would be the death of her career no matter how people reacted. She wasn't in the right headspace to put out an album.
Promoting, recording, interviews, photos, and everything else that went along with releasing an album seemed daunting to her, not exciting like it had in the past.
Taylor wasn't going to allow outside circumstances to prevent her from doing what she had been since she was a child. Songwriting was her favorite form of expression and one of the only things that had always been there for her through her highs and lows.
But even then it felt different. She wasn't the same person that wrote her previous albums. She certainly wasn't the same person as she was when she was a teenager and sometimes she didn't feel like the same person she was a couple weeks ago.
This feeling is a normal part of growing up, she knew that, but it still felt as though she was mourning for a person that she holds within her constantly but will never be able to see or speak to again.
Taylor pulled out her phone again, this time pulling up the notes app, and typed 'the old Taylor can't come to the phone right now cause she's dead.'
