Fifteen - Taylor
It was eight in the morning, well before Taylor prefers to wake up. She stood in the kitchen staring intently at her coffee pot as if willing it to hurry up. It was so cold in her apartment all night. She'd tried to turn the temperature up but it refused to get warmer. She blamed her lack of sleep on the temperature and not her worry for the girl down the hall. She'd woken up every couple hours and had to walk down the hall to see Emma. Physically seeing that Emma was okay and sleeping calmed her enough to go back to sleep herself.
Her phone started to ring. It was surely her mom, no one else bothered to call for another two hours at the very least. Even if they did she would usually send them straight to voicemail anyway. She answered it and held the phone up to her ear. "Hey mom."
"Good morning honey, I was just going to call and let you know that I loved you before I started my day. What are you doing up? I expected to leave a voicemail." Her moms voice soothed her like honey. She didn't have the energy to make up a believable lie.
"I just didn't sleep very well last night. I'm making some coffee now."
"Oh, I'm sorry. Why didn't you sleep well?" She paused for a minute before redacting that question. "Don't answer that, I actually don't think I want to know."
"No. Not like that. Gross mom. It was just a long night." Emma had walked in and sat down on one of the kitchen stools. "I'm going to have to call you back mom. I love you."
"I love you too." Her mother hung up without questioning anything else.
"Morning Tay." Taylor slid her a cup of water and a couple aspirin. "Thank you. I'm so sorry I dragged you into that disaster last night."
"It's okay Em, I just want to know what was going on. I don't understand why you would've gone there by yourself." Taylor held out a cup of coffee in front of Emma, offering it to her. She shook her head and grimaced.
"I got a call from my mum after you left. My dad is moving to London."
"Oh?" Taylor didn't say anything else, unsure of why that news would cause this reaction.
"He's going to move in with her I guess. They want me to come back and live in London for a few months. I don't know why. I don't know why I said yes. I hate my dad and I haven't seen him since I graduated high school. My mum is a much better person without him there. So yeah, mummy and daddy are together again and I'm going to London to live with them so we can play house or some shit like that." Emma rolled her eyes and put her head down on the kitchen table.
"This might sound dumb. Is there any way you could rent an apartment in London? That way you wouldn't have to live with them and could be there for whatever it is they're wanting and also having your own space."
"No, Taylor, I can't. The only reason I can pay rent here is because Amanda's parents are like daddy big bucks. She pays most of it. I need to find a job or something. Oh shit, I need to call Amanda. I think I need to find a way to apologize to the bartender. Oh god, last night was so dumb. I don't know why I did that. I can't believe I just snapped at you. I'm so sorry, you were trying to help."
Emma looked like she was both suddenly remembering what happened last night and about to cry. Taylor went over to hug her and rub her shoulders, whispering in her ear. "It's okay. I promise it's okay."
"I'm so sorry." Emma cried into Taylor's arms. "Don't hate me, I'm so sorry."
"Emma, I don't hate you. It's okay." Emma didn't stop crying, she just started to hyperventilate. "I don't hate you." Taylor was never very good at this kind of thing. She didn't know what else to do or say. "Do you want something to drink? I could make tea."
