Chapter 7: Misunderstanding

You have an agitated sleep for the rest of the night, having nightmares about the terrifying creature that stepped into your room. When it's time to wake up, you are exhausted. Your brother sees it when you sit down around the table.

" - You had trouble sleeping, didn't you?

- Yeah... I had nightmares.

- Is it related to Charles again?

- No, it isn't."

"I mean, I don't think it is..."

You wear the same outfit as yesterday to go to school and so does Brian. You have nothing else to tell each other while you wait for the bus and on your way to school. When you arrive, you are welcomed by Raven, as always. She looks tired but happy to see you anyway.

" - Hi, [Y/n]!

- Good morning, Raven. How are you?

- I'm sooo tired, but I'm fine. How about you?

- I'm drained too.

- What happened?

- Just nightmares, no big deal.

- You wanna talk about it?

- There's no need, don't worry."

She waves at your brother.

"Hey Brian!"

He waves back, blushing a little.

" - Hey R-Raven!

- Wanna have lunch with us today?

- Sure! I'd love it!

- We'll keep a place for you.

- Thanks. See you!"

You look at your friend once he leaves.

" - Already flirting, huh?

- You bet!" She smirks.

She jolts, looking at something behind you. You turn back and see Charles staring at you. You get startled aswell.

"Charles! You scared us!"

He laughs maniacally.

"That was my goal! I love making people scared."

You roll your eyes back.

" - Did you do that in your former school aswell?

- Of course! We were even a small group enjoying doing scary things during the whole year, especially on Halloween, as you can guess. But I forgot the most important thing. Good morning! How are you doing?

- We were doing fine before you came.

- [Y/n]! Don't be so rude.

- Your friend is right, [Y/n]. I'm sorry if my discourtesy hurt you, this wasn't my objective.

- Yeah yeah, no hard feelings I guess.

- So, dear partner, I think we need to talk about how you're going to help me today. Raven, is it okay if I steal him/her/them away from you?

- Of course you can, he/she/they is/are not mine.

- Thank you. See you in class!"

She waves goodbye at you as you walk away from her, accompanied by the new student.

" - So... how's Brian doing? I know he told you about us.

- If you want to know how he is, you should go ask him yourself.

- The problem is that I don't have much time, and I have his brother/sister/sibling right next to me to answer my question.

- He's fine. Are you happy now?

- How about Aurelia?

- How do you know about her?!

- Your brother is a bit too... chatty.

- What else did he tell you about our family?

- Nothing else, really. It seems like you had an agitated night.

- This is none of your business.

- Look, I know you don't like me for reasons I don't even know, but I'm just trying to be nice, okay?

- By staring and smiling at me in a nightmarish way?

- Wait, do I really make you uncomfortable with my toothy smile?

- I... I'm sorry..."

He looks down, looking ashamed of himself.

" - I thought that this time it would be different...

- What... what do you mean?

- In my former school, I used to wear a facial mask to cover the bottom of my face because of my smile. I guess I'll have to do it again...

- You-you don't need to do it! I just thought you were doing it on purpose.

- I don't...

- You were right, we need to learn more about each other to understand better the other."

He smiles demonically.

"That's nice... very nice..."

The ring bells, marking the beginning of classes.

"We should go, [Y/n]. There are a lot of things that we'll have to do today..."
