Chapter 13: Missing

Today, when you arrive at school, you don't see Raven anywhere. You shiver when you remember the conversation between Nightmarionne and you.

"Why did he mean by "unless my dark counterpart has already done his work"?"

As soon as you get out of the bus, your brother leaves you.

" - Where are you going again? Don't leave me here alone!

- Sorry, I have to take care of something.

- Brian!"

He quickly disappears from your view.

"What's wrong with him?"

You sigh and sit on a bench. Now that your friend isn't here, you truly feel lonely. All of a sudden, someone sits next to you.

"Good morning, [Y/n]!"

You look to your left and see Charles.

" - Um... hello, Charles.

- How are you today?

- I'm... fine, thanks.

- Are you sure? You seem worried.

- I'm not."

"I can't tell him that I'm scared about the reason why Raven isn't here."

" - Oh, by the way, Raven asked me to tell you that she wouldn't be there today. She feels sick.

- How did she tell you that?

- We have each other's phone number."

You simply nod.

"Thank you for letting me know."

He wraps an arm around your shoulders and smirks.

" - Where's your brother at?

- I don't know, he left me as soon as we arrived.

- Well, it seems like it's just the two of us now...

- Y-yeah..."

You gently push him away.

" - I'm sorry, but I don't feel comfortable with physical contact.

- I understand, sorry...

- It's okay."

During the first break, all you can do is spend time with your class partner.

" - I swear, those mathematics will kill me one day.

- I agree with you.

- You are good at maths, though.

- What? You must be joking! I'm better at meth even though I've never done drugs.

- That's... I didn't expect that comeback." He chuckles a little.

You smile a bit.

" - Anyway, what do we have after the break?

- Physics.

- Oh my God no!

- Yes."

He sighs.

"Physics is just scientific mathematics! I like chemistry better, at least we can make some experiments."

You just nod. A few hours later, after struggling through your next classes, you reach lunchtime. You don't see your brother anywhere and eat face to face with your classmate.

" - To be honest, I enjoy being alone with you.

- How so?

- It just feels like we can strengthen our friendship when no one else is around, don't you think?

- If you say so.

- What are you worried about?

- Nothing.

- You can't lie to me. I know there's something wrong. Whether it's related to me or not, just go ahead.

- I'm just concerned about Brian's behaviour. He's been acting weird lately.

- Really? Can you tell me more?"

He rests his chin on his hand, listening to you while looking into your eyes with a soft smile.

" - Well, he seems to try to stay away from me and I don't know why.

- Did you have an argument with him?

- Last time something happened, we made things clear and everything went back to normal.

- Maybe you should talk to him and figure out what's going on. That's the best advice I can give."

You nod and look down. He gently places his hand on your shoulder.

" - Just... remember I'm here if you need to talk, okay? I know I'm a creep, but I love you and care about you.

- You what?!

- I-I meant it in a friendly way!"

You both look away from each other.

" - Oh, okay, thanks for the clarification.

- Th-that's normal..."

After school, Mrs. Vanbrabant, your brother's french teacher, comes to you.

" - Good afternoon, [Y/n]. Are you Brian's brother/sister/sibling?

- Yes, ma'am.

- Great! It's been a few days since last time Brian attended class and we were wondering if you knew why he wasn't going to school?"

You look at her in surprise.

" - Ma'am... I am sorry but I don't know what you are talking about. I've always seen my brother coming to school with me and he always leaves with me. However, the only change I noticed is that he's been leaving me as soon as we arrive here.

- What? So you are telling me that Brian is skipping class?!

- I don't know what he's doing when I'm not around him, ma'am. I told you everything that I know."

The teacher sighs.

" - Next time you meet him, tell him that if he doesn't come back to school starting tomorrow, I will personnally call your parents.

- I will spread the word, you can count on me.

- Thank you, [Y/n]. Have a nice day.

- Thanks, the same goes to you, ma'am. Goodbye."

At the same time, Charles joins you at the school's gate.

" - Why did that teacher want from you?

- Apparently, Brian has been skipping class for a couple of days."

He chuckles but quickly coughs afterwards.

" - What's so funny?

- I'm sorry. It's just that I can't imagine him skipping class.

- Well, he has never been a good student, not gonna lie, but I couldn't expect that from him.

- I hope he'll find a way to get out alive from this situation...

- Yeah, I hope so.

- Anyway, I have to go, see you.

- Yep, see you tomorrow."
