,,Underneath the bridge, tarp has sprung a leak, And the animals I've trapped have all become my pets, And I'm living off of grass, and the drippings from my ceiling, It's OK to eat fish 'cause they don't have any feelings.'' -Something In The Way Nirvana

Kurt's POV

I glared at the clock on my desk, the tick-tock of its hands ringing loudly in the stillness of the room. Lia and Krist were late again, as usual. I couldn't help but hope that for once, they would surprise me and arrive on time. But I knew better than to expect punctuality from Lia, who had never been on time since the day I met her.

Today was a special day - my 17th birthday. One more year and I could finally escape this house, this constant cycle of being passed between relatives and my dad. They all thought I was difficult to handle, but really it was just them not understanding me.

I was currently staying with my dad, hoping to avoid yet another move.I had already run away before and stayed with Krist for a while, but my mother found me and brought me back. But today was supposed to be different - just me and my two best friends celebrating together. Nothing else I could wish for. And to top it off, my stomach wasn't hurting too bad today, so it was shaping up to be a good day.

Lia even promised to stay out with me longer since Krist had to leave early. We planned to sit under the bridge like we used to after school, smoking weed and talking for hours on end.As soon as I heard a knocking on the front door, I jumped out of my chair.

I knew it was Lia from the sound of her voice when she greeted me. She often came over without knocking, knowing my dad was usually at work and there was no danger of anyone breaking in.I grabbed our small pack filled with everything we needed for later - cigarettes and weed - and hurried down the stairs to meet her.

,,Sunshine!" Lia exclaimed with a wide smile as soon as she saw me. I rushed towards her eagerly, wrapping her in a tight hug as she did the same to me.

,,Honey," I breathed, a genuine smile spreading across my face. I had missed her so much.Krist and I both did. Every day without Lia was just a little bit sadder. I missed her infectious energy, her ability to make everyone around her smile. I missed our long conversations, getting high together, creating new music and dreaming of becoming rockstars.

All of it, I missed every single day. But now she was here, even if only for a month, and I planned on making the most of it. ,,I missed you," I mumbled as we pulled away from the hug, a sad look crossing Lia's face. ,,I missed you too, sunshine. Both of you," she replied in a soft voice, playfully ruffling my hair like she always did. Normally, I would have protested but this time, I soaked it all in, knowing that it would be a while before she could do it again.

,,Happy birthday buddy!" Krist suddenly exclaimed, trying to lighten the mood as he enveloped me in a bear hug. I couldn't help but chuckle as my hands wrapped around his sturdy frame, grateful for his friendship. ,,Happy birthday Kurtie!" Lia chimed in with a bright smile, once again messing up my hair affectionately. ,,Group hug!" Krist called out enthusiastically as he reached for Lia and pulled her into our embrace. For that moment, everything felt perfect and I knew it was going to be a good day.
