{Mercy's POV}
We had almost made it back to the Scout Regiment and we all were exhausted.
We joked and laughed nearly the whole way back after I told the vague story of how Levi and I came to be, but hunger quickly set in and everyone was quiet and cranky.
I noticed that Armin had been silent almost the entire trip and hung back from the group. I slowed the pace of my horse to ride next to him while the rest of our squad trotted along."You okay?" I asked as he glanced over at me with surprise. He wasn't even aware I had joined his lonely ride.
"Just thinking," he laughed nervously.
"Do you wanna talk about it?"
He dropped his gaze downward and then focused on the trek ahead.
"It's just been a weird week..." he said quietly but I could barely hear him over the clopping of our horses.
"Yeah, it really has," I said awkwardly and looked away.
"If you tell me what's bothering you," he began as he stared straight forward, "I'll tell you what's bugging me."
"Hm, a compromise I see," I jested and clicked my tongue. "What makes you think something is bothering me?"
"I know we haven't been friends long, but I can just tell." He looked over to me and I met his eyes. "Tell me about your week."
I let out a small giggle as I looked away.
Where the hell do I begin? I thought.
We were quiet for some time while he waited for me to spout my week's recollections, and I tried to recall the story Levi had concocted about my kidnapping before I misspoke.
"Well," I finally began hesitantly, "The week started out great. I took down some Titans and got to see the sea with you guys. When we returned I got the sleep of a lifetime..."
I hated lying.
That's all it was.
The week didn't start out great. My week started up with horrible memories flooding my brain. Then, I took down a herd of Titans which caused a fight with Levi and suspicions from Hange. After that, we got to see the sea, but Levi was distant and stern with me. The trip home was brutal after I was so disheartened with his behavior, and when I got back to my place my nightmares continued to get worse.
"...After that, I went and visited my friend from the Cadet Core," I said through a deep breath. It was hard pretending she was still alive. "The next day I was going to visit her parents, but I got kidnapped."
Ronnie was dead and there was no need for me to keep it from him or from anyone. Was I afraid of pity? Did I feel guilty about her death because my father had only killed her because of me?
"That sounds nice," Armin smiled as I caught his stare. "Except for the kidnapping of course."
"It's no big deal. Levi swooped in and saved me like he's humanity's strongest soldier or something," I laughed and hoped it was enough to mask the pain I felt about it all.
Armin's puppy dog eyes stared back at me expressionless and I could tell I wasn't fooling him.
"Anyway," I sighed with defeat, "My week ended perfectly. I got to hang out with my former squad and pick out a beautiful dress."
"That sounds like a pretty okay week," he said suspiciously.
"Your turn," I responded quickly in hopes he wouldn't press me about it.
"No deal."
